Payton Panzeri posted a career-best round of 73 and is tied for fourth in the individual standings while leading the Maverick women's golf team to a team score of 315 (+27) and a tenth place standing after Monday's opening round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate, while got under way here at the Village Course at Waikoloa.
The Meridian, Idaho native posted a pair of birdies as well as 13 pars while making just three bogeys in a steady round around the 6,112-yard, par 72 course. She is part of a 4-way tie for fourth place in a group that trails individual leader Madison Murr of Cal State San Marcos by four shots heading into Tuesday's second and final round.
Her +1 round surpassed a round of 74 at the Westminster Wasatch Invitational from earlier this season as the best of her collegiate career.
Murr and Talia Gutman of Sonoma State, who posted a 2-under par round of 70, are the only two players in the 78-woman field to go under par.
CMU senior
Cassidy Phelan recorded a round of 79 and is tied for 38
th while fellow senior Britlynn O'Dell posted a round of 81 and is tied for 51
st place. She and freshman
Hunter Gledhill, who posted and 82, each made a birdie on Monday. Gledhill is tie for 59
th.
Freshman
McKenzie Dolph also made a birdie and carded an 89 on Monday. She is tied for 74
th.
The Mavericks are near the middle of the pack of the 15 teams.
Simon Fraser leads the tournament at 296 (+8) and is two shots ahead of Missouri-St. Louis, which posted a team score of 298 (+10). Cal State East Bay is third at 299 (+11).
The Mavs are six shots behind ninth place Westen Washington and sit five ahead of Vanguard.
The Mavs will play alongside those two teams and St. Martin's in Tuesday's second round, which will begin with an 8 a.m. HST shotgun start (Noon Mountain).
