Mavericks Sweep Mountaineers by Large Margins

GUNNISON, CO. - Colorado Mesa Hockey announced that they raised $32,000 with their 7th Annual Pink the Rink charity game, before they made their way to Western Colorado to take on the Mountaineers.

This 2 game series would be the first of 4 against the Mountaineers, with the Mavericks sweeping last season's series.

In game 1, Chris McElroy would get the start in net. During the first period, CMU would throw 15 shots on net, yet only find themselves getting 1 past the Western goalie. Defenseman Colton Wurzer-Seepers, would get his second of the season from the point to take the 1-0 lead into the intermission.

As per usual the Mavericks found their offensive footing in the second period. Jared Riley would get it started with a shorthanded breakaway. 4 minutes later junior Bryson Sutterby would get a powerplay goal, giving the Mavs a 3-0 lead. The Mountaineers would find their way onto the scoreboard twice in the second as well. However, Western's momentum stopped abruptly with Seth Kern's powerplay tally. Mesa would then see Bryson Sutterby get his second and third goal of the game, to give Sutterby a hattrick on the night. Seth Kern would score again to give him 2 goals in this competition as well. Then Collin Fitzgerald would cap off the second period with a gorgeous post and in goal from the point to give the Mavericks a 7-2 lead after two.

In the final period of play on day 1, Eli Wilson and Ethan Levesque would both score to lay the game to rest, with a final score of 10-3, Mavericks.

Game 2 would be the final away game of the season for the Mavericks, who looked to end the semester on a high note, and that they did. Freshman goalie Jake Weber got the start on Saturday.

Game 2 against Western was a route. The Mavericks' scoring for the game by period was 7 in the first, 7 in the second, and 8 in the third, for 22 goals, the most by a CMU team ever.
