RICHMOND, Va.— A program-record and NCAA Division II-leading 33 Colorado Mesa University swimming & diving student-athletes were named to the 2022-23 College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) Scholar All-American Teams, recently announced by the organization.
Both Maverick units had more selections than any other NCAA Division II school as the Maverick women had 18 honorees, 13 of whom were first team selections. The Maverick men had 15 total honorees, including 11 first team picks.
Notably,
Lane Austin,
Mahmoud Elgayar and
Lauren White were all selected for the fourth time in their illustrious careers while
Lily Borgenheimer picked up her fifth overall honor, the last three of which came while representing CMU.
The CSCAA Scholar All-America program recognizes students who shined in the pool while achieving a grade point average of 3.50 or higher during the 2023 spring semester or the 2022-23 academic year.
First Team honors are bestowed to those who met that GPA requirement and who participated in the national championship meet. Second-Team selections also earned a 3.50 GPA or higher and achieved a "B" time standard for the national championship or participated at a diving zone qualification meet.
All criteria can be found on the CSCAA website.
"Congratulations to these exceptional student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding achievements both in the classroom and in their sport," said CSCAA Executive Director, Samantha Barany. "The CSCAA takes pride in recognizing individuals who excel in academics while competing at the highest level."
More from Executive Director Barany: "Earning a 3.5 GPA or higher is a remarkable accomplishment requiring dedication, discipline, and a commitment to academic excellence. Furthermore, competing at the national level is a testament to their talent, dedication, and perseverance in the water. These student-athletes have set themselves apart from their peers by excelling in both areas, showing their exceptional abilities and drive for excellence."
In 2022-23, both Maverick teams won their fifth consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles before going on to earn their best NCAA Division II National Championship finishes.
The CMU women, who had set a RMAC Championship scoring record of 1,325 points, finished fourth, while the men took fifth at the national championships while crowning a 2-event national champion in
Ben Sampson, named as the CSCAA's NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Year. He is now a 3-time First Team Scholar All-American.
