Boyd, Rodgers lead Mavericks on All-RMAC Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference released their all-conference baseball teams on Wednesday (May 9) morning ahead of the conference baseball tournament. A total of 10 players represented Colorado Mesa with three earning at least a share of the major awards.

Colorado Mesa head coach Chris Hanks was named the RMAC Coach of the Year for the 12th time in his career. Hanks has led the Mavericks to their 11th straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title and in the process earned his 1,000th win of his career becoming the fastest coach in NCAA Division II history to do so.

Senior Julian Boyd earned All-RMAC First Team honors and was named a Co-RMAC Player of the Year after a fantastic final season as a Maverick. Boyd batted .432 with 20 doubles, 10 home runs and 33 stolen bases. He became just the second Maverick to accomplish the 10/20/30 feat joining ABCA National Player of the Year Austin Kaiser in 2014.

The Los Angeles native is just three stolen bases shy of tying the program record for stolen bases.

Junior shortstop Harrison Rodgers was named to the All-RMAC First Team and, like his teammate, was named the RMAC Co-Player of the Year. Rodgers batted .379 with 16 doubles, 12 home runs and 55 runs driven in during his fourth season with the Mavericks. He set several career marks during the season including at-bats (523), hits (187) and RBIs (141).

The San Diego native recently was named RMAC Academic Player of the Year and will be up for Academic All-America honors again later this month.

Freshman Liam Hohenstein was named to the All-RMAC First Team as a starting pitcher and was awarded RMAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year. Hohenstein joins his teammate Kannon Handy as RMAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year recipients after going 7-0 in his first collegiate season. He made nine starts and pitched 48 and two-thirds innings and recorded 52 strikeouts. He was named RMAC Pitcher of the Week after pitching a complete game shutout against UCCS.

Senior Anthony Durbano earned All-RMAC First Team honors as a relief pitcher for the second time in his career. The Riverdale, Utah native had 18 appearances and went 5-0 with six saves all coming out of the bullpen. He finished with 31 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched and limited opposing hitters to a .196 batting average.

Colorado Mesa had six All-RMAC second team selections including two pitchers, two outfielders, a catcher, and an infielder.

Lefty pitcher Kannon Handy was named to the Second Team after making 13 appearances. He finished the season 5-2 with a 6.04 ERA in 53 and two-thirds innings pitched with 79 strikeouts.

Pitching staff ace Jacob Rhoades earned Second Team honors after going 5-2 with a 4.26 ERA. He set career-highs in innings (57), appearances (13), and strikeouts (50) while limiting his opponents to a .235 batting average.

Catcher Declan Wiesner was named All-RMAC Second Team after handling the Maverick pitching staff and having an outstanding year at the plate. He finished the regular season with a .358 batting average with 13 doubles and six home runs.

Junior Jonathan Gonzalez earned All-RMAC Second Team honors after batting .365 with eight doubles and four home runs. Gonzalez paired with Rodgers to form one of the best double play tandems in the conference.

Outfielder Rob Sharrar earned All-RMAC Second Team recognition after a career year roaming the outfield for the Mavericks. Sharrar led the team in batting at .446 with seven doubles, eight home runs and 48 runs driven in.

Senior Conrad Villafuerte was named All-RMAC Second Team and earned Gold Glove honors for his work in the outfield. The Fountain Valley, Calif. native batted .420 with 14 doubles and 11 home runs.

The Mavericks are set to take on Colorado Christian at 7:00pm tonight at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex in the opening round of the RMAC Tournament.
