GOLDEN, Colo.— Elijah Williams,
Justin Thompson and Zack Buckhold all won events with NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks while
Sierra Arceneaux and
Heather Yackey set school-records as the Colorado Mesa University Maverick track and field teams had another impressive day on Saturday here at the Kit Mayer Classic, hosted by the Colorado School of Mines.
The Maverick women also won three events and set three NCAA marks as
Josie Coffey won the high jump while
Gaby Horton, Arceneaux,
Serenity Burnett-Perry and
Avry Kennison took the 4x100-meter relay. Arceneaux also set an NCAA qualifying time and program-record setting time of 55.52 seconds to place second in the 400 meters while
Kiana Jackson won the triple jump. Arceneaux has now posted NCAA qualifying marks in four different disciplines in the first two week's of CMU's outdoor season.
Her Saturday time was nearly a half-second quicker than the former record of 55.96, posted by Cathryn Frame (Ambler) in 2014 and matched by Jill Payne five years later in 2019. Arceneaux was second only to Colorado's Grace Jenkins (55.34) on the day and now leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in the 100, 200 and 400 meters.
Yackey's school-record came in the discus throw, as she took second with a mark of 44.64 meters (146-5), taking Kendra Naibauer's 9-year old Maverick mark of 43.58 meters (143-0) off the record board. Yackey had ranked second in CMU history coming into the day.
Williams won the 200 meters with a NCAA qualifying time of 21.08 seconds and took second in the 100 with a mark of 10.54. His times are just off his school-record 10.48 and 20.88.
Sterling Brassfield also took third in the 100 with a time of 10.70 to move into a tie for third in program-history.
In the 200,
Kade Christensen placed seventh overall in 21.80 seconds while
Justin Blanton moved into the No. 7 spot in CMU history with an eighth-place tie of 21.85.
Meanwhile, Thompson set his second NCAA mark of the weekend, winning the high jump with a clearance of 2.07 meters (6-9.5) on Saturday.
He had also recorded a provisional qualifying long jump mark on Friday, when three of the meet's field events were held.
Buckhold also claimed victory in the jumps, winning the triple jump with an effort of 14.85 meters (48-8.75) to move all the way into third on the Mavericks' all-time charts while.
Elsewhere,
Dawson Heide took ninth place on the Mavs' all-time chart in the 400 meters, finishing ninth in 49.73 seconds.
Freshman
Logan Hafey now ranks fifth in program history for the 400-meter hurdles after posting a time of 55.85 seconds to finish in sixth place.
Sophomore
Becker Ell also recorded an outdoor career-best pole vault clearance of 4.60 meters (15-1) to take second while
Hayden Riley, the shot put winner on Friday, took fourth in the discus throw at 48.39 meters (158-9).
On the women's side, Coffey cleared 1.71 meters (5-7.25) to take the RMAC performance list lead in the high jump. The relay team posted a time of 46.50 seconds to rank second in the conference and sixth in program history.
Meanwhile, Horton and Kennison both posted times of 12.30 in the 100 to move into a tie for sixth in program history. They finished second and third, respectively.
In the 200,
Jordan Brockman took third in 25.70 seconds while
Emma Dikken was fourth in 25.71. Brockman also finished third in the 100-eter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.96 seconds to move into a tie for eighth in CMU lore.
In the field,
Kaelea Gibson cleared 1.58 meters (5-2.25) to finish third in the high jump while moving into a tie for ninth in CMU history.
Jackson, the school-record holder, was victorious in the triple jump with a mark of 11.83 meters (38-9.75) while freshman
Natalie Smythe cracked the Mavs' all-time top-10 with a fifth place mark of 10.90 meters (35-9.25).
Augustine Hancock also had a solid discus throw mark of 40.28 meters (132-2) in the discus throw to finish in sixth place while moving into eighth place in CMU history in the hammer throw thanks to a heave of 42.17 meters (138-4).
The Mavericks will continue their season at home next week hosting the Maverick Multi on Thursday and Friday and the Maverick Invite on Friday afternoon and throughout the day on Saturday.
