GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – It took some long matches and nervy moments, but CMU men's tennis pulled out a much-needed win in its home opener Saturday against Colorado College.
Colorado Mesa came from behind after conceding the doubles point, winning four three-set singles matches to help defeat Colorado College 5-2 in CMU's home opener from the Elliott Tennis Center on Saturday.
Jandre Van Wyk was the only Maverick to win both matches on the day while
William Leschig and
Henry Scheck each pulled out key three-set wins to turn the tide of the dual.
This match was a far cry from April 1, when the Mavericks cruised to an 8-1 win over Colorado College on the road. The Tigers announced their intent from early on in the doubles portion, as CC's No. 3 team of Aidan Little and Lucas Pastor trounced CMU's
Jorge Abreu and
Tegan Hartman 6-1.
Diogo Manzano and
Jandre Van Wyk pushed the battle to the final court with a 6-3 win, but CC's No. 1 of Nate Beerman and Andrew Kaelin defeated the Mavs' top tandem of Leschig and Scheck 7-6 to hand the opening point to the Tigers.
CC started the singles matches hot as well. With singles courts 1-4 beginning first, CC was leading on all four courts after three games and three out of four after five games, allowing the Tigers to dream of their first dual win over Colorado Mesa in 19 attempts dating back to the 2008-09 season.
The No. 1 singles court was the first to finish, as Abreu pulled away to put the Mavs on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win. Nate Beerman put CC right back on top, however, by rallying from a set down to defeat Manzano 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 on court three.
The turning point in the dual came on court number four, as
Henry Scheck came back from both a set down and down 5-3 in the third set to defeat CC's August Knox 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 7-5. Shortly after, Leschig secured a back-and-forth win on court two, beating Lucas Pastor 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-4 to put the Mavericks up 3-2 and give CMU the lead in the dual for the first time.
Yet another three-setter went the Mavericks' way on court five. Hartman nearly locked things up in two sets after winning the opening set, but lost the second set in a tiebreaker to CC's Andrew Kaelin. Hartman didn't look back in the third, however, running away with the decisive set to win 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 and clinch the dual for CMU.
The match on court six between CMU's Van Wyk and CC's Jack Delafield also was knotted at a set apiece, but with all other matches completed and the dual clinched, the teams decided to play a 10-point tiebreaker for the match in lieu of an entire third set. Van Wyk prevailed, winning four of the final five points to lock things up with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win.
It won't go down in the books, but Colorado College continued its competitive day by defeating the Mavericks in all three contested exhibition matches.
Brandon Keller and
Jackson McKay fell in a doubles match 6-1 and each also lost singles matches of one set to eight, with Keller falling 8-1 and McKay losing 8-3.
Colorado Mesa will have its second home contest in as many weekends when they host No. 33 MSU Denver next Saturday at 2 p.m. A Senior Day ceremony is scheduled before the dual starts for 1 p.m.
