GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Both extremes of the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team experience charts claimed victories as the Mavericks closed out their season with a Saturday dual against the nation's 35
th-ranked MSU Denver Roadrunners on Senior Day here at the Elliott Tennis Center.
Fourth-year "Senior"
Jandre Van Wyk won his final career match and Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Year candidate
Henry Scheck both won their singles matches in tie-breakers for the Mavericks, who put up a valiant fight before going down, 5-2 to the nationally-ranked Roadrunners, who won for the tenth straight time to improve to 14-3.
Van Wyk and fellow redshirt junior
Tyler Landen were recognized before the dual and then played together at No. 1 doubles, battling to a 4-4 tie when their match was left unfinished after the Roadrunners won the other two doubles matches to take the doubles point.
The Roadrunners then claimed the first four singles matches before Scheck and Van Wyk finished off the Mavs' 8-12 season on a high note.
Scheck won his No. 4 singles match over Stephen Kossifas, coming from a set down to win 5-7, 6-4 and 10-8 in the match-tiebreaker. Meanwhile, Van Wyk was able to finish off a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) comeback win of his own over David Kijak at No. 6 singles.
Landen and Van Wyk will graduate this spring and do not plan to return for an available fifth season of eligibility thanks to the NCAA's blanket COVID related eligibility waiver after both of their freshman seasons were cut significantly short in 2020.
Nevertheless, they will have fond memories in their time as Mavericks, racking up 116 combined wins.
Van Wyk, who hails from Pretoria, South Africa, finishes his Maverick career with 62 total wins while Landen, a product of Centennial, Colorado just outside Denver, posted 54.
Meanwhile, Scheck finished his freshman campaign with a 14-4 overall record, including a 12-1 record in dual-meets.
Laden also played singles on Saturday, falling 6-3, 6-4 to nationally-ranked (No. 60) Jeanloup Auzias in the top flight singles.
