GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Dawson Heide and
Mica Jenrette set school-record and NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying scores in the multi-events, highlighting a day of 14 event wins and six NCAA marks that the Colorado Mesa University track and field teams racked up on Sunday during Maverick Invite action at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.
Heide scored 7,207 points in the decathlon, bettering Spencer Jahr's 5-year old CMU standard of 7,145 by 62 points. He also set three new personal-best marks over the meet's two days and ranks fifth on the season-long NCAA Division II performance list.
Meanwhile, Jenrette won the heptathlon with 5,022 points to break her year-old Maverick record by 40 points while moving into the No. 9 spot of the national list. Teammate
Jordan Brockman also set a NCAA provisional qualifying score of 4,654 points to finish third in the 10-woman field and move into the No 2 position on CMU's all-time top-10 list.
Redshirt senior
Kiana Jackson also set a winning and NCAA qualifying mark of 11.99 meters (39-4) in the triple jump while
Heather Yackey won the discus throw at 44.39 meters (145-8), just shy of her week-old school-record throw of 44.64 meters (146-5).
Josie Coffey also shared the event win in the high jump, clearing 1.65 meters (5-5) while
Kaelea Gibson cleared a career-best 1.60 meters (5-3) to finish fourth.
On the track, sophomore
Jordan Burnett swept the 200 and 400 meters with times of 24.87 and 56.14 seconds while
Kira MacGill won the 1,500 in in 4:38.49 to move up two spots to third in Maverick history. Burnett now ranks fifth in Maverick lore for both the 200 and 400.
The Mavs quartet of also won the women's 4x400-meter relay in 3:56.80 while
Avry Kennison and
Averie Griffith combined for three second place finishes. Kennison posted a time of 12.34 seconds in the 100 meters while Griffith finished the 100-meter hurdles in 14.83 seconds while clocking a time of 1:05.29 in the 400-meter event.
Lexie Williams also finished third in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:05.72, moving up three spots to sixth in CMU history.
The Maverick men won four track events on Sunday as
Elijah Williams swept the 100 and 200 in 10.48 and 21.44 seconds. His 100-meter time is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and matched his own school-record.
Meanwhile,
Justin Blanton won the 400 in 48.31 seconds, just 0.07 off Augustus Barnes' 10-year old CMU record of 48.24, the oldest CMU men's outdoor track & field history.
The Mavs' "B" squad
Sterling Brassfield,
Jeremiah Wilson,
Jeremiah Reed and
Joey Zook also won the 4x100-meter relay in 40.97 seconds while the "A" squad was disqualified for a faulty relay exchange.
In the field,
Eddie Kurjak led the Mavs, clearing an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 2.05 meters (6-8.75) in the high jump, placing second.
Justin Thompson had also finished second in the long jump on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile,
Hayden Riley won the shot put with a throw of 16.23 meters (53-3), just 4 ½ inches shy of his own school-record.
The Mavericks will send a small group of athletes to the Mines Pre-Conference meet next weekend before qualifying athletes will compete at the Apr. 28-30 RMAC Championships in Chadron, Nebraska.
