GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Gavin Korkeakoski and
Mark Testa both won events while
Dawson Heide and
Mica Jenrette lead the multi-events after the first day of outdoor track & field action during the Maverick Invite & Multi, which will continue Sunday here at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.
Korkeakoski won the javelin for the second straight meet with a throw of 58.64 meters (192-5) ahead of teammate
Cameron Kalaf, who placed second at 57.40 meters (188-4) while Testa seized an early lead in the 3,000-meter steeplechase going on to win in nine minutes, 38.96 seconds as just the third Maverick to ever break ten minutes.
In the multis, Heide scored 3,821 points in the first five events of the decathlon while freshman teammate
Logan Hafey registered 3,188 as the only other competitor in the field.
In the heptathlon, Jenrette scored 3,032 points in the first four events, opening an 86-point lead over the Colorado School of Mines' Avery Wright and the rest of the 10-woman field. CMU's
Jordan Brockman is in third with 2,867 points.
Sunday's action will begin at 11 a.m.
