Mavericks close out spring season opener

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team wrapped up play on their first competition of the spring season on Tuesday (Mar. 7) afternoon as the took home 12th place at the Las Vegas Desert Classic at Boulder Creek Golf Club, hosted by Missouri-St. Louis.
 
The Mavericks shot 302 in their final round as a team and didn't lose or gain any positions from the previous round. They stayed ahead of ranked teams St. Mary's and UCCS but fell behind No. 23 Cal State Monterey Bay and Central Missouri by eight strokes.
 
RMAC foe Colorado Christian won the team title with a 6-over, 870 for the tournament. They fended off a late rally from No. 8 Lee and stayed ahead of No. 2 Barry, No. 3 West Florida, and No. 4 Oklahoma Christian.
 
Peter Grossenbacher was the Mavericks top scorer today as he fired a 1-under, 71 in his final round to finish in a tie for 28th place on the individual leaderboard. He opened his round with a par followed by his first birdie which came on the par-4, No. 10.
 
After playing his first nine holes at even-par, he closed with back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 before his final bogey of the day on No. 7.
 
Yael Chahin finished as the Mavericks top placer at 6-over, 222 after a final round of 4-over, 76. Chahin had just one birdie on the day which came on the monster par-5, 635-yard, No. 16.
 
No. 2 ranked Beck Burnette from Lee won the individual medalist honor with a 12-under, 204 over his three rounds.
 
The Mavericks will be back in action on March 19 as they will play at the Southern Colorado Masters at Pueblo Country Club.
