Mavs blow past Grizzlies before winds thwart series finale

Sharp hits two homers, Fugate matches CMU record with two triples in 15-1 win

ALAMOSA, Colo.— Aislyn Sharp hit two of Colorado Mesa University's five home runs as the Mavericks blasted Adams State University, 15-1 in the first game of a scheduled Sunday afternoon Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference twin-bill.  The second game was then canceled due to high winds as the Mavericks swept the weekend series here at the ASU Softball Field while posting 50 runs and 52 hits in three games.

The Mavericks, now victorious in 26 straight meetings with the Grizzlies, improved to 11-8 overall and 9-2 in RMAC play while the Grizzlies suffered their 13th straight loss to fall to 3-18 overall and to 0-10 in conference contests.

Sunday's game was ended via the mercy-rule after five innings, which was also the case in the Mavericks' 22-5 second game win on Saturday.

The Mavs scored at least one run in 16 of their 17 half-innings throughout the weekend, which began with a 13-10 victory.

Sharp with 3-for-4 with four RBIs in Sunday's contest, hitting home runs in both the second and third innings.  Sarah Jorissen and Myah Arrieta also hit solo home runs in the Mavs' 7-run third while Rylee Crouch added her tenth bomb of the season in the top of the first as the Mavericks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after an Ava Fugate RBI triple later in that inning.

Fugate also tripled in the third inning as she became just the fifth Maverick to ever have two triples in a single game.

Meanwhile, Hannah Sattler picked up an impressive win, giving just five singles and a single run while striking out seven Grizzlies.  She is now 6-4 on the year and has completed eight of her ten starts.

The Mavs finished Sunday's game with 17 hits, 13 of which were for extra-bases.  All nine of the Maverick starters in the lineup had hits while pinch hitter Makalya Westmoreland also joined the hit parade.

The Mavs finished with five doubles and three triples as Arrieta had both a triple and home run while Fugate added a double during a 3-for-3, 3 RBI day.  Jorissen, who had one of the doubles, Arrieta and Ashley Bradford all had two hits.

The Mavs came out of the shoot firing on all cylinders as Arrieta hit a triple on the second play of the game before Bradford plated her with a double.  Crouch then hit the very next pitch out of the park to put the Mavs up 3-0.  Jorissen the doubled two plays later before scoring on Fugate's first triple.

Sharp's first homer of the day down the left field line allowed the Mavs to take a 5-0 lead before the Grizzlies got their only run of the day on a 1-out Angeline Mitchell single followed by a Sydney Muniz double down the left field line.

The Mavericks responded in a big way, putting up eight hits, six of which were for extra-bases in the 7-run third, that blew the game wide open.

Sharp then added an RBI single in the fourth to extend the lead to 13-1 before Fugate hit a 2-run double with two outs in the top of the fifth to complete the scoring.

The Mavs will be on the road against next weekend playing at New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M. on Mar. 11 and 12.
