LAS VEGAS, N.M.— The Colorado Mesa University softball team continued its' run-scoring and home-running hitting bonanza as the Mavericks hit ten bombs, five in each game, while sweeping a Saturday Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader from New Mexico Highlands University on Saturday here at the Cowgirls' Brandt Field.
The Mavericks won the first game of the twin-bill and the 4-game weekend series, by a 13-4 margin and then won the second 19-4 in five innings. The Mavs, now 13-8 overall and 11-2 in RMAC play, have now put up double-digit run totals in each of their last six games, winning each.
NMHU fell below .500 in both their overall (10-11) and RMAC (6-7) marks.
The Mavs also racked up 40 hits throughout the doubleheader, 23 of which went for extra-bases as reigning RMAC Player of the Year
Ashley Bradford hit three home runs and three doubles while driving in nine on an 8-for-10 day at the plate. Bradford also scored seven runs throughout the doubleheader and was 4-for-5 with two homers and a double in the first game.
Meanwhile,
Rylee Crouch hit two home runs in the second game to increase her RMAC-leading total to 12 while
Miranda Pruitt homered in each game.
Aislyn Sharp also went 6-for-7 with two walks and a hit by pitch and reached safely in nine of her ten plate appearances. She also tallied three doubles in the first game to match a school-record while freshman
Makayla Westmoreland had two doubles in that game and three during her 5-for-8 day. She also hit her first collegiate home run.
Ava Fugate and
Brandi Haller also homered for the Mavs while
Hannah Sattler and
Kennedy Vis picked up the pitching wins to improve to 7-4 and 4-3, respectively.
Marisa Nehm made relief appearances in both games and gave up just one hit and one walk in 4 1/3 total innings of work.
Game 1
The Mavericks never trailed and scored four runs in the first three innings before the Cowgirls plated one in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 4-1. The Mavs then extended the lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth on a Fugate RBI single before the Cowgirls cut the deficit to 5-4 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth chasing Sattler from the game.
However, an RBI double by Sharp followed by a 3-run homer by Bradford in the top of the sixth gave the Mavericks a 9-4 lead.
Westmoreland and Bradford then doubled in runs in the seventh before a 2-run Haller homer capped the scoring.
Sharp went 4-for-4 during the game while Bradford had five RBIs.
The Mavs finished the contest with 19 hits, including six doubles and 11 for extra-bases.
Game 2
The Mavericks put up 12 runs on 12 hits in the fourth inning alone as they banged out 21 total hits, including seven doubles and the five home runs. The Mavs also had a 3-run first inning and a 4-run second building 3-0 and 7-3 leads before exploding for the dozen in the fourth to put the game, eventually ended via the mercy rule, to bed.
Bradford was 4-for-5 with four runs and three runs scored in the game. She also added two doubles and her third homer of the day while Crouch went 3-for-4 with her two homers. Crouch also scored four runs and drove in another four.
Bradford, Crouch and Pruitt all hit home runs in the fourth inning. Pruitt's was a 3-run shot. Crouch also hit a 3-run shot in the second while Westmoreland had a 2-run homer to begin the scoring on the second play of the game in the top of the first.
Vis went three innings to pick up the win while Nehm threw two innings of hitless relief after coming into the circle with the game well in hand.
The Mavs have now won 26 consecutive games over the Cowgirls since 2015.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
