Mavs complete weekend sweep

Crouch hits three homers while Sattler tosses first shutout

LAS VEGAS, N.M.— Rylee Crouch hit three home runs, her 13th, 14th and 15th of the season, and drove in nine while Hannah Sattler tossed a 2-hit shutout, the first of her collegiate career, to lead the Colorado Mesa University softball team to two more big wins and a weekend series sweep of New Mexico Highlands University on Sunday here at the Cowgirls' Brandt Field.

The Mavs won the first by a 15-0 margin in five innings and took the second, 14-6.

The Mavericks have now won eight straight games overall, posting double-figure run totals in each, to improve to 15-8 overall and to 13-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.  NMHU fell to 10-13 overall and to 6-9 in conference play.

The Mavericks finished the 4-game weekend set with 61 runs and 71 hits, banging out 31 more on Sunday, 13 of which went for extra-bases.

Crouch went 6-for-8 on the day, hitting a solo homer, 2-run double and an RBI single in the first game before going 3-for-5 with a pair of homers in the second.

Miranda Pruitt and Brandi Haller also hit their eighth and sixth homers of the season, respectively, in Sunday's doubleheader.

Game 1

The Mavericks scored ten runs in the second inning to blow the game wide open.  Crouch started the scoring with a solo homer to begin the inning and then later added a 2-run double with just one out.  Ashley Bradford, who want 3-for-4 with four RBIs throughout the contest, and Haller also had 2-run hits.

Crouch then delivered an RBI single in the third.

The Mavs then tacked on four runs in the fourth as Pruitt delivered a pinch-hit homer before Makayla Westmoreland hit a sacrifice fly.  Bradford then followed that up with a 2-run triple.

Meanwhile, Sattler was uber-efficient and needed just 51 pitches to record the shutout.  She allowed one-out hits in the first and second innings before retiring 11 of the final 12 batters she faced to improve to 8-4.  She recorded two strike outs and did not walk or hit any batters.

Game 2

The Mavericks played from behind for the first time of the weekend as the Cowgirls jumped out to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first and three in the second.

However, the Mavericks roared back with seven runs and eight hits in the third.  Crouch had the biggest blow, a 2-run homer, while Aislyn Sharp, Westmoreland, Bradford, Sarah Jorissen and Bella Aragon all delivered RBI hits.

Two innings later, the Mavericks extended the lead to 9-6 on RBI doubles by Sharp and Westmoreland in the fifth as Kennedy Vis (5-3) held the Cowgirls to just one run in four innings of relief of starter Marisa Nehm.

Sattler then came in to pick up the save, giving up just two hits in two innings as the Haller and Crouch hit security home runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

The Mavericks have been on the road for the last two weekends but will return home to face UCCS next weekend in a 4-game set at the CMU Softball Field.  Doubleheaders will get underway at noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The Mountain Lions swept a doubleheader on Sunday and split a 4-game home series with Regis to move to 8-17 overall and 5-11 in RMAC play.
