Mavs deliver strong pitching efforts to push Bohte over century mark

CMU extends winning streak to ten in Saturday doubleheader sweep

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Thanks in large part to impressive pitching performances by Hannah Sattler and Marissa Nehm as well as three key 2-run plays, the Colorado Mesa University softball team extended its winning streak to ten game while pushing Head Coach Mercedes Bohte (Lovato) over the 100 career win milestone on Saturday afternoon here at the CMU Softball Stadium.

The Mavericks won both games of the doubleheader against UCCS (8-19, 5-13 RMAC) by 4-0 and 6-3 margins as they improved to 17-8 overall and to 15-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play as Bohte picked up her 100th and 101st career wins in just 2 ½ seasons at the helm of the powerhouse Maverick program.

She is the fastest of three Maverick head coaches to reach the milestone (Kris Mort, Ben Garcia) and needed just 122 career games to do so.

A standout pitcher in her collegiate days at CSUN, Bohte was certainly proud of her pitchers on Saturday as Sattler recorded her second straight shutout in the first game win before Nehm tossed 5 1/3 innings of 1-hit, no-run relief in the second game as the Mavericks rallied from 3-1 down to record the victory.

Offensively, the Mavericks benefited from a key 2-run error in the second inning of the first game before Myah Arietta hit a go-ahead 2-run double in the fourth inning of the second game.  Ashley Bradford, the reigning RMAC Player of the Week, then hit an insurance 2-run homer in the sixth inning as the Mavs completed the sweep.

Game 1

Sattler fanned a career-high nine Mountain Lions and spread six hits to record her ninth win of the season.  Meanwhile, the Mavericks scored three runs in the bottom of the second and added an RBI groundout in the fifth to provide the necessary offensive punch.

Both teams had their chances as the Mavs left nine runners on base while the Mountain Lions left eight stranded.

The Mountain Lions had runners on the corners in the top of the first but could not score as Sattler got out of the inning with a strikeout.  The visitors also had a lead-off double from Lexi Wagner in the second, but again failed to score as Sattler (9-4) was able to get the next three outs.

The Mavs then capitalized on their chance as singles by Brandi Haller and Sarah Jorissen followed by a Miranda Pruitt walk loaded the bases with just one out.

Iliana Mendoza then hit an RBI single up the middle to put the Mavericks on the board before an error led to two more Maverick runs and a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Sattler then gave up a walk and single to begin the top of the third but would 14 straight outs into the seventh before the Mountain Lions loaded the bases.  However, Sattler blew a pitch past Morgan Hernandez-Belew to record the shutout after the Mavs had gone up 4-0 on an RBI groundout by Ava Fugate that plated Bradford.

The Mavs finished the game with seven hits as Bradford, Haller and Mendoza all finished with two hits.

Braelyne Crenshaw (1-8) took the complete game loss for UCCS after surrendering seven hits, four walks and four runs, three of which were earned.

Game 2

The Mavs scored in four of their six half-innings but fell 3-1 behind as four walks, an error and three wild pitched helped the Mountain Lions plate three runs in the top of the second.  Starter Kennedy Vis was responsible for three of those walks before Nehm came on in relief, only to walk in the third run.  However, the Mavs were able to turn in a 5-2-3 double play to get out of the jam with no further damage.

The Mavs, who had scored one run on a Haller sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first were able to do so again in the bottom of the second thanks to a drop in left field.

The Mavs were still down 3-2 as the game moved to the bottom of the fourth before Arrieta's 2-run double plated Mendoza and pinch-runner Dakota DiPaola with the go-ahead runs.

Bradford then hit her sixth homer of the season with two outs in the bottom oof the sixth to complete the scoring.

Nehm then recorded a 3-up, 3-down seventh as she improved to 2-0 after setting down all but three of the 19 batters she faced.

UCCS reliever Autumn Kunze, who came on right after the error in the second inning, fell to 3-3 for the Mountain Lions after giving up seven hits and four runs in 4 2/3 innings of relief work.

The Mavs finished the game with nine hits as eight different starters had one.  Rylee Crouch went 2-for-4 for the Mavericks while Wagner and Molly Sherwood had UCCS' only two hits of the game.

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
