ALAMOSA, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University softball team exploded for 35 runs on the same number of hits as
Rylee Crouch hit for a doubleheader cycle while driving in ten runs to help lead the Mavericks to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference sweep over host Grizzlies on Saturday here at the Adams State University Softball Field.
The Mavericks banged out 16 hits, including six for extra bases, in a 13-10 first-game win before going of for 19 hits, including eight for extra-bases in a 22-5, 5-inning blowout in the night-cap.
The Mavericks have now won 25 straight games over the Grizzlies and have scored 22 runs in two of their last five contests overall, a figure that is tied for third most in CMU history.
CMU is now 10-8 overall and 8-2 in RMAC play this season while the Grizzlies fell to 3-17 overall and 0-9 in the conference as their losing streak reached 12 games.
Crouch went 5-for-8 throughout the doubleheader hitting a triple and single in the first game before adding another single, a double and her RMAC-leading ninth home run in the second. She also had seven RBIs in the second game, tied for second most in program history.
Meanwhile,
Myah Arrieta went 7-for-8 with nine runs scored and five RBIs throughout the day while matching the school-record for runs scored in a game (5) in the second.
Ashley Bradford was also 7-for-9 during the twin-bill.
The Mavericks scored in 11 of their 12 half-innings throughout the day putting up four or more runs in five different innings.
Game 1
Arrieta went 4-for-5, including a double and triple, with four runs scored while Bradford was 4-for-4.
Aislyn Sharp also had a 4-RBI game hitting a 3-run shot to give the Mavs a 5-2 lead in the top of the second.
The Mavs then increased the lead to 7-2 on a 2-run Crouch triple in the fourth before the Grizzlies scored four runs of their own to cut the deficit to 7-6.
The teams then exchanged runs in the fifth before a 2-run
Brandi Haller single put the Mavs ahead, 10-7.
Arrieta then had an RBI triple in between RBI singles by Sharp and
Sarah Jorissen in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to 13-7 before a 3-run homer by Riley Marshall made things a bit more interesting in the final half-inning.
Hannah Sattler picked up the win for the Mavs in the circle, going four innings to improve to 5-4.
Game 2
The Mavericks scored early and often plating five runs in the first inning as Crouch and Haller had back-to-back run-scoring doubles. Crouch then hit her 2-run homer in the second to increase the Mavs' lead to 7-1.
The Mavs then scored four more runs in the third and added six in the fourth as Jorissen hit two singles in that inning alone. The Mavs led 17-3 at that point and then scored five more runs in the top of the fifth as Arrieta hit a 3-run homer.
Arrieta, Bradford and Crouch, who were in the 2, 3 and 4 spots of the Maverick lineup went a combined 9-for-11 with ten runs scored and 14 RBIs.
Meanwhile,
Kennedy Vis (3-3) recorded her first collegiate complete game, giving up just two earned runs and six hits in her five innings.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m.
