GOLDEN, Colo. –
Kash Anderson's huge win at 197 pounds helped the No. 12 Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team secure a key 26-12 win over Colorado School of Mines on Friday (Feb. 3) evening to remain unbeaten and in first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Boise, Idaho native defeated returning NCAA All-American and No. 5 ranked Anderson Salisbury 8-5 at 197 pounds which wound up sealing the dual for Colorado Mesa. Anderson fell behind early by a takedown and was rode for nearly the entire first period before a late reversal knotted the score at the end of the first period. In the frame Salisbury tried pinning Anderson in a cradle but could never get the right leverage or lock.
Salisbury earned a reversal in the early portion of the second period to take a 4-2 lead before a
Kash Anderson escape gave the Oredigger a 4-3 lead and roughly 45 second to the good in riding time. The third period was all Anderson as he scored an escape, a takedown, and another late takedown after a Salisbury escape to seal the win over the exhausted wrestler.
The dynamic duo started the dual off right for the Mavericks with a sudden victory win and a major decision victory from
Dawson Collins and
Collin Metzgar at 125 and 133 pounds respectively. They gave the Mavericks the early 7-0 lead before Colorado School of Mines would halt the run at 141 pounds.
Newly anointed starter at 149 pounds
Daniel Magana got his second starting dual team victory of the season with a 5-3 win over Teague Dilbeck. The win was his first of the season at 149 pounds while his other win came at 157 pounds at San Francisco State.
Mines would earn wins in two of the next three bouts, sandwiching
Gus Dalton's major decision victory at 165 pounds.
One of the more underrated wins of the dual came at 184 pounds as
Jason Bynarowicz improved to 4-1 in RMAC duals with a pin of Ryan Cody at 184 pounds. His pin came in the first period after earning a takedown and a four-point nearfall before recording the fall. The win also gives him four straight.
Ruben Samuelson closed out the dual with a decision win at 285 pounds. Samuelson record a takedown with roughly 15 seconds left to secure the 8-7 decision victory.
The Mavericks will host arch-rival Western Colorado on Thursday in the Bank of Colorado Battle in Brownson at 6pm. With a win over the Mountaineers, Colorado Mesa would clinch at least a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for the third straight season.
