CHADRON, Neb. – The Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team closed the dual season out with a 28-16 win over the Chadron State Eagles on Saturday (Feb. 11) morning at the Chicoine Center. The win gives the Mavericks the outright Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship.
The Mavericks won six matches to the Eagles four and benefitted from three pins in the middle weights to gain the big advantage.
Dawson Collins led off the dual with an outstanding 8-2 win over Quade Smith at 125 pounds. Collins led 2-1 entering the third period and scored a pair of takedowns and an escape along with gaining the riding time point after the bout was decided.
At 133 pounds,
Collin Metzgar fell to No. 2 ranked Quentrevion Smith of Chadron State 4-3 after Smith scored a late takedown.
The Eagles took the 141-pound bout before the Mavericks rattled off three straight victories including two by pin.
Ryan Wheeler had an interesting match that wound up in a pin of previously unbeaten Brody Lamb followed by a
Gus Dalton pin at 165 pounds.
Colorado Mesa and Chadron State split the final four matches with Mesa earning wins at 184 and 197 pounds and the Eagles winning bouts at 174 and 285 pounds.
Jason Bynarowicz scored a pin at 184 pounds while
Kash Anderson picked up a major decision victory at 197 pounds.
A select group of Mavericks will compete in the Rocky Mountain Open on Sunday in Golden.
