Two 7-0 wins push MacDonald to coaching milestone

CMU blasts Doane, Hastings in spring openers

KEARNEY, Neb.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team dropped just one set during emphatic 7-0 wins, the 199th and 200th men's wins for 18th-year Maverick Head Coach Dan MacDonald.

Playing in their first matches of the spring, the Mavericks blasted NAIA foes Doane and Hastings on Friday to allow MacDonald, who also now has 258 women's wins, to reach the milestone inside the University of Nebraska-Kearney's new Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

CMU is now 2-3 overall this year.

Against Doane (1-2), the Mavericks won the doubles point with victories in the first and third flights before sweeping all singles affairs plus an exhibition doubles set.

In doubles, Tyler Landen and Jandre Van Wyk were 6-4 winners at No. 1 over Jorge Chavez and Jose Purizaca to clinch the early 1-0 overall advantage.  Minutes earlier, Jorge Abreu and Tegan Hartman had claimed a 6-2 No. 3 doubles victory.

In singles, Diogo Manzano won a pair of 6-0 sets at No. 6 singles before van Wyk was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 5.  William Leschig then clinched the victory with a similar 6-3, 6-2 win over Purizaca at No. 2.

The Mavs continued their domination as Emil Hultman won 6-4, 6-3 over Esteban Gutierrez at No. 3 singles while Landen and Abreu won set-tiebreakers in their victories.  Landen was a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 winner over Jorge Chavez in the top flight while Abreu got by Federico Infante, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 3 singles.

Hultman and Henry Scheck were also 6-2 winners in an exhibition doubles match.

The Mavs were truly dominate against the Hastings Broncos (0-2), winning all three doubles matches before claiming eight 6-0 set victories in a straight set singles sweep as MacDonald shuffled his lineup slightly, resting Landen in singles and he and van Wyk in doubles.

Hartman needed just 28 minutes to defeat Agustin Lopez at No. 6 singles while Manzano needed just 42 minutes to take down Evan Franke at No. 4 for his second straight 6-0, 6-0 win.  Hartman also won 6-0, 6-0.

Abreu was also a double-bagel victor while Scheck dropped just one game.  Van Wyk lost just two while Leschig got the No. 1 singles start, delivering a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Broncos' Nick Smeltzer.

The Mavericks will remain in Kearney on Saturday to face fellow NCAA Division II foes Augustana and William Jewell.
