GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After playing a part in two key conference wins on the Front Range,
Mac Riniker picked up his second RMAC Defensive Player of the Week award in the season's first four weeks.
Riniker, the reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Year, averaged 17 points and four steals per game as the Mavericks went on the road to defeat Colorado School of Mines and No. 8 MSU Denver. Riniker currently leads the RMAC by averaging 3.2 steals per game.
The redshirt junior from Steamboat Springs had 14 points, six rebounds and two steals in the win over Mines. Riniker shined brightest against the previously undefeated Roadrunners, scoring 20 points and coming away with a season-high six steals. All seven of Riniker's rebounds over the weekend were defensive boards.
While Riniker being a defensive pest is nothing new, his improved offensive performance this year has been as much of a story for the 5-1 Mavericks. Riniker is the RMAC's second-leading scorer at 19.2 points per game and ranks second in the conference with a 64.9 percent field-goal percentage. He is also shooting 42.3 percent from three-point range and 80.5 percent from the free-throw line, including making 24 of his last 25 attempts over the past three games.
On a five-game winning streak after losing its season opener, Colorado Mesa will have its first pair of home conference games this weekend. The Mavericks will host UCCS on Friday and Regis on Saturday, with tipoff slated for 7:30 p.m. both nights.
