GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks used five bonus-point victories en-route to a convincing 30-10 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's wrestling win over visiting San Francisco State University on Friday night in Brownson Arena.
The Mavs got two technical fall victories, two major decisions and a forfeit while adding two other decisions and went wire-to-wire with their second dual win as many nights, beginning the year 2-0 overall and 1-0 in RMAC action while the Gators managed three match victories plus another in an extra match while falling to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in RMAC contests.
The Gators had also dropped a narrow 23-21 decision to Western Colorado University in neutral-mat action here this afternoon.
CMU jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the evening duals as Dayson and
Denim Torgerson book-ended a 6-0
Oran Huff shutout at 133 pounds with bonus-point wins. The Aurora, Utah natives outscored their respective opponents 33-8 as the Mavs later went on to out-score their opponents 30-4 in the final three matches of the official dual to close out the win, after the Gators pulled to within 18-10 with their lone bonus-point win at 165 pounds.
Dayson Torgerson, a true freshman, is now 8-3 and victorious in his last four as he racked up three near falls for 11 points in a 22-5 technical fall win over Hayden Ancheta at 125 pounds. Huff then blanked Tony Margiotta, 6-0 at 133 before the older Torgerson brother, a redshirt sophomore, built an 11-3 lead over Sean Yamasaki through two periods of the 141-pound match before the final two minutes were scoreless.
The Gators did get on the board at 149 as Lawrence Saenz scored a third-period takedown to edge CMU's
Juan Garcia, 5-4.
However,
Owen Cline received a forfeit at 157 pounds as the Mavs increased their team lead to 18-3.
SFSU then answered with back-to-back wins through Kyle Botehlo, who defeated
Kaden Hine, 19-6, and Gage Mettler, who edged
Gus Dalton, 3-2.
However, the momentum would be short-lived as
Jason Bynarowicz dominated Kweli Herandez-Maître in the 184-pound bout, 15-0. Bynarowicz scored takedowns in each of the three periods and added a 4-point near fall in the second before closing out the technical fall win late in the third when Hernandez-Maitre, a Pan American Games bronze medalist for Puerto Rico, was called for back-to-back stalling calls.
That victory clinched the dual although the Mavericks
Gabe Carranza easily controlled Laith Gilmore, 11-2 at 197 pounds before
Tyler Doyle improved to a team-best 11-2 with a 4-2 decision win over Emilio Franco Sandoval at 285 pounds. Both Carranza and Doyle have now won four straight matches.
The Mavs have now won four straight and seven of the last eight duals over the Gators since 2013.
The Mavs have also won 12 straight home duals, a streak that will go over three full calendar years, before the Mavs are next at home on Jan. 27, 2024 against the Colorado School of Mines.
CMU will have multiple competitions on the road before that, competing at the 44
th Midwest Classic in Indianapolis on Dec. 16-17.
