ALBUQUERQUE, NM. – The Colorado Mesa hockey team played their third and fourth games of the season this weekend against the University of New Mexico Lobos.
In game one, the Lobos scored only one goal in the first period and were held to that difference until the second where they found their way to a 3-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
The Mavericks found their way on the scoreboard early in the third with a shot from Joey Voyles that redirected off
Bryson Sutterby and found its way to the stick of
Eli Wilson for his first goal of the year. The rest of the game was plagued by Colorado Mesa penalties, with seven power plays helping the UNM Lobos to a 7-1 finish.
Game two found the Mavericks playing a more physical brand of hockey and keeping the Lobos in an even battle for the whole game. The Mavericks again found themselves in penalty trouble, but unlike game one, the Lobos would not receive a single penalty the whole game.
In the second period the Lobos would get a power play goal. Despite the Mavericks outshooting the Lobos in this game, that would remain the only tally for either team in the Saturday match up.
The Mavericks now fall to 0-4 to start the season and look to get a win on the board with their upcoming home games against Colorado School of Mines, Oct. 20th and 21st.
