Mav women claim four wins, NCAA provo mark and school-record

Burnett's 400 time moves her into nation's top 10

ALAMOSA, Colo.— A winning and improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time from Jordan Burnett in the 400 meters, two wins from fellow sprinter Sierra Arceneaux and a school-record shot put from Virginia Tomon were the highlights of another strong day for the nation's 24th-ranked Colorado Mesa University women's indoor track & field team on Saturday at the Wes Lavong Open.

The Mavericks were victorious in four of the eight events they competed in as Daisy Rinehart also claimed victory in the pole vault in the 5-team meet inside the Adams State University High Altitude Training Center.

Burnett continued her strong redshirt freshman campaign taking the 400 in 56.39 seconds, second fastest in program history.  When converted for track size and altitude, she ranks inside the top 10 of the nation and atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 55.87 seconds.  The Fairplay, Colorado product also finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 25.40 behind Arceneaux, who took victory in both the 60 and 200 with season-best times of 7.71 and 25.33 seconds.  The Mavs advanced four to the finals in the 60 as Avry Kennison took third in 7.78 seconds.

In the 200, the Mavericks took each of the top four positions as McKenna Molder finished third behind Arceneaux and Burnett in 25.60 seconds, moving into the No. 8 spot on the CMU's all-time performers' list.    Kennison took fourth in 26.20.

In the field, Tomon broke her own 7-week old school-record in the shot put with a mark of 13.03 meters (42 feet, 9 inches), good for second place on the day.  Heather Yackey also fared well, placing fourth at 11.43 meters (37-6).

Elsewhere, Rinehart cleared 3.05 meters (10-0) to claim her first collegiate victory.

Freshman Augustine Hancock was the top Maverick in the weight throw, finishing sixth with a heave of 14.05 meters (46-1.25).

On the track, Averie Griffith finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 9.28 seconds while Alyssa Britton finished the 800 in 2:26.33 to take seventh.

The Mavericks will continue their season next weekend at both the Mines Winter Classic and New Mexico Classic.
