ALAMOSA, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men won three events and placed second in four during a solid day of performances at Saturday's Wes Lavong Open indoor track and field meet held here in the Adams State University High Altitude-Training Center.
The nation's 13
th-ranked Mavs also racked up five third place finishes and a pair of NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks as they competed in eight different disciplines with a partial team against squads from the host Grizzlies, Western Colorado and Trinidad State Junior College as well as numerous unattached athletes.
Teo Casados claimed two of the Mavs' victories as he sprinted to victory in the 60-meter final with a time of 6.91 seconds, after matching his personal-record of 6.88 in preliminaries. Casados then came back to win the 200 in 21.94 seconds, improving his No. 3 positioning on the Mavs' all-time performers' chart while setting his first career NCAA provo time with the altitude and track-size conversions that lowerd his time to 21.68 seconds.
The Mavs' other win came from
Mark Testa, who took the 5,000 meters by a wide 14- second margin in 15:47.04, less than a second off his PR, quite an accomplishment considering he was running at 7,547 feet of elevation.
In the 60 meters, the Mavericks qualified five for the finals as
Sterling Brassfield took second in 6.95 seconds while
Kade Christensen ran to a time of 6.84 seconds in the preliminaries, improving his No. 4 position in Maverick history. He did not start the final.
In the 200,
Jeremiah Reed finished third in 22.57 seconds.
The Mavs also had two of the top three finishers in the 400 as Julio Atondo-Avalos took second in 50.86 seconds while
Kelsey Montague was just behind in 50.94.
Triston Charles also took third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:06.58 while
Zayden Davis continued his strong hurdling form, taking third over 60 meters in 8.04 seconds, just off his week-old school-record of 8.02.
In the field events,
Hayden Riley finished second in both the shot put and weight throw. He recorded a NCAA provisional qualifying shot put mark of 16.58 meters (54 feet, 4 ¾ inches) and a weight throw mark of 16.46 meters (54-0). He has now placed in the top-2 of all six of his events this season, including one victory.
In the pole vault,
Garrett Searls finished third after getting over 4.11 meters (13-5.75).
The Mavericks will continue their season next weekend, splitting their squad between the Mines Winter Classic and New Mexico Classic.
