GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – In a match of two nationally ranked heavyweight programs, it all came down to bonus point…in every single match of the evening. No. 12 Colorado Mesa prevailed 30-20 over No. 8 Adams State on Thursday evening in Brownson Arena in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
All ten bouts were decided by bonus points with Colorado Mesa earning six wins with three going by pin and three major decision victories while Adams State won two by pin and two by major decision.
Dawson Collins and
Collin Metzgar won the first two matches of the dual with Collins earning a pin at 125 pounds and Metzgar picking up a major decision at 133 pounds.
Adams State answered back with a major decision and pin at 141 and 149 pounds respectively.
No. 5
Ryan Wheeler stopped the mini-Grizzly streak at 157 pounds with a pin of Travis Vialpando at 1:15. Adams State wrestled without returning NCAA National Champion Noah Hermosillo who was out with an injury. It would have been a matchup of the No. 1 ranked 157-pounder and No. 5 Wheeler.
Adams State's Aden Valdez may have scored the biggest personal win of the evening as he scored a 16-4 major decision victory over Maverick
Gus Dalton who entered the day ranked No. 9 at 165 pounds.
After the Mavericks had to injury default at 174 pounds and Adams State taking their first lead of the evening, the Colorado Mesa upper weights took over and brought home the victory.
Jason Bynarowicz came through with a 12-2 major decision victory at 184 pounds with a dominating performance of Grand Junction native Hunter Tobiasson followed by a
Kash Anderson 9-1 major decision victory over Ben Tonnesson at 197 pounds.
It all came down to the big boys, with the Mavericks clinging to a 24-20 lead over the Grizzlies.
Ruben Samuelson knew all he needed to do was keep it close to secure the win over their nationally ranked opponent. He didn't really care about that as he ended the match quickly with a pin of Abraham Garcia at the 36 second mark of the bout.
Colorado Mesa remained unbeaten in RMAC duals at 2-0 and will look to keep the record unblemished tomorrow night against New Mexico Highlands in Brownson Arena.
