Davis, Ortega take down school-records

Thompson claims two of eight CMU men's wins at Western meet

GUNNISON, Colo.— Zayden Davis and Dayne Ortega both set school-records while Davis and double jumping event winner Justin Thompson set NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying efforts to lead the Maverick men's indoor track & field team to a solid set of performances at Saturday's Western Colorado Open inside the Mountaineer Field House.

Sterling Brassfield, Teo Casados, Mark Testa and Hayden Riley also claimed event wins for the Mavericks in their second meet of the season and first in six weeks.

Davis matched the recently-set CMU record in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries before going under the former standard of 8.05 seconds with a winning and NCAA qualifying time of 8.02 in the finals.  Dawson Heide has set the former record of 8.05 during the Mountaineer Open & Multi in December.

Meanwhile, Ortega blazed to a 400-meter win in 49.37 seconds, more than a half-second quicker than Kelsey Montague's former Maverick record of 49.89, set last season.  Ortega later finished second in the 200 at 22.41 seconds, an event Casados won in 22.07 seconds to move into third in Maverick history.

In the jumps, Thompson covered 7.36 meters (24-1.75) of track and sand in the long jump, to crack the nation's top 10.  He also won the high jump by clearing 2.00 meters (6-6.75).

In the 60, the Mavericks swept the top four places as Brassfield claimed the win in 6.84 seconds.  Casados (6.90), Jeremiah Reed (6.96) and Beau Thornton (6.98) also all went under seven seconds in the sweep.

The Mavericks also claimed a distance win as Mark Testa won the 3,000 meters by nearly 14 seconds with a time of 9:08.88.

In the throws, Riley won the shot put with a mark of 15.48 meters (50-9.5) after taking second in the weight throw with a heave of 16.04 meters (52-.7.5).

Becker Ell also claimed a second-place finish in the pole vault by clearing 4.41 meters (14-5.5).

Rese McClinton-El and Triston Charles were also able to finish fourth in their respective events.  McClinton-El leapt 6.79 meters (22-3.5) in the long jump while Charles ran to a time of 4:31.11 as the Mavs' lone representative in the mile.

The Mavs will continue their season next Saturday at the Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open in Colorado Springs.
