Kira MacGill and redshirt freshman
Jordan Burnett were amongst a group of four Colorado Mesa University event winners as they turned in NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying efforts to lead the Maverick women in Saturday's Western Colorado Open here at the Mountaineer Field House.
MacGill won the mile by nearly 25 seconds in five minutes, 10.83 seconds, which with the altitude and track-size adjustments, will easily put her as high as third on the national list at 4:54.31. Burnett won the 200 meters in 24.96 seconds to move into fourth place on the Mavericks' all-time top-10 performers' chart and into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference lead with a converted time of 24.72 seconds.
Meanwhile, freshman
Avry Kennison and veteran
Mica Jenrette also won events during solid overall days. Kennison won the 60 meters in 7.75 seconds to move up a spot to seventh in program history before placing fifth in the 200 with a time of 26.16.
Jenrette won the 60-meter hurdles in 9.13 seconds after setting a personal-record time of 9.07 seconds in the preliminary heats to move into seventh in CMU lore. She also set a new indoor career-best high jump mark of 1.64 meters (5-4.5), finishing second in that event after coming up of another win on tie-breaking procedures. She moved into seventh in Mav history for that discipline.
The Mavs also had six other second place finishers.
Sierra Arceneaux was second in the 60 at 7.77 seconds after turning in the fastest time of the day (7.74) in the prelims. Burnett also placed fourth in 7.81 seconds, moving into a tie for tenth on the Mavs' all-time performers chart in that discipline.
Kierra Arceneaux placed second in the long jump with a mark of 5.29 meters (17-4.25) while
Jordan Brockman took third with a leap of 5.26 meters (17-3.25).
Freshman
Katie Thomson also claimed a second-place finish in the triple jump, turning in a mark of 11.31 meters (37-1.25), surging all the way into fourth place in Maverick history.
Shot put school-record holder
Virginia Tomon also finished second, turning in another solid effort of 12.35 meters (40-6.25).
Heather Yackey took third in that event at 11.64 meters (38-2.25).
Meanwhile,
Augustine Hancock led the Maverick weight throwers with a heave of 14.25 meters (46-9), moving up a spot to seventh in CMU history ahead of Yackey.
On the track,
Elaina Arcand finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.20 while
Emma Dikken was third in 1:00.38.
Ricky Maestas also finished second in the 3,000 meters, running to a time of 11:40.09.
The Mavericks will continue their season next weekend at the Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open in Colorado Springs.
