GUNNISON, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University redshirt sophomore
Kira MacGill won a sprint finish to claim the individual victory at the Mountaineer Invite cross country meet on Saturday morning here at Gunnison Middle School.
MacGill won the 5-kilomter race in 18 minutes, 0.3 seconds to edge Western Colorado University's Katie Doucette by three tenths of a second and in the process became the first Maverick woman since 2014 to win an individual title.
MacGill finished second at last year's meet, nearly 40 seconds behind Doucette.
On Saturday, she became the first Maverick individual winner since Tess Skoe won the 2014 Maverick Open. He time was just one second off her 5K personal best, quite an accomplishment considering her PR was run much closer to sea level in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Saturday's race was held at more than 7,700 feet of elevation.
As a team, the Mavericks finished Saturday's race with a team score of 39 points behind the host and nation's seventh-ranked Mountaineers, who had the second through sixth place finishers to tally a winning team score of 20 points.
