ALLENDALE, Mich.— Colorado Mesa University sophomore
Josie Coffey jumped to a fifth place finish in the high jump as she guided the Maverick women's track and field team to their highest point total and highest ever team finish at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, which wrapped up on Saturday here at Grand Valley State University.
Coffey, the final Maverick to compete in the meet, cleared 1.73 meters (5 feet, 8 inches) and scored four team points for the Mavericks, who claimed a tie for 43
rd place in the final team standings.
Her individual finish was also the highest for any Maverick female at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
CMU men's triple jumper
Spencer Purnell also competed on Saturday and turned in a mark of 14.50 meters (47-7) to place 16
th in his event. He was the last of three Mavericks to compete during the meet.
Coffey, a native of Lakewood, Colorado, cleared the opening three heights on her first attempt before getting over her ultimate finishing mark on her second attempt. She and four others then went out at 1.76 meters (5-9.25) as only three women in the 20-woman field were able to get over that height.
Coffey's effort allowed her to earn first team all-America honors for the first time in her career. Coffey was also a second team honoree during her collegiate debut 2021 indoor season, when she finished ninth at the NCAA Championships.
