GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks combined to hit six home runs and received two stellar pitching efforts from
Paige Adair and
Shea Mauser as they extended their winning streak to seven with 5-1 and 16-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball wins over visiting Black Hills State University on Saturday afternoon at the CMU Softball Stadium.
Adair fanned a career-high 13 Yellow Jackets and gave up just two hits in the first game before the Mavs hit a season-high five home runs in Game 2, three of which came in the opening inning alone. Meanwhile, Mauser gave up just three hits to record her fourth shutout out of the season.
The second game was ended after just five innings by the mercy-rule and saw ten different Mavericks, including three pinch-hitters, combine for 14 hits.
Ashley Bradford had two home runs in that game as the Mavericks hit their 55
th through 60
th of the season throughout the day.
The wins were the Mavs' 29
th and 30
th in the last 31 games, and improved their overall record to 31-5. They also moved to 23-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play as they kept pace with co-leading Colorado Christian University, which won 9-1 and 4-0 at home to the Colorado School of Mines in Lakewood earlier in the day. The Cougars (35-5) have now won 21 straight games overall. They hit seven home runs in Saturday's doubleheader sweep and have 61 home runs to lead the Mavs and the rest of Division II.
BHSU fell to 10-18 overall and to 8-18 in RMAC play.
Game 1
Coming off a no-hitter in her last outing six days ago in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Adair retired the first eight Yellow Jackets she faced, five on strikes as the Mavs took the early lead on a first-inning solo home run by
Ellie Smith, her tenth of the year.
Freshman
Myah Arrieta then recorded an RBI double in the bottom of the third to double the Mavs' lead to 2-0.
After getting out of a mini-jam in the top of the fourth, Adair then saw her teammates double the lead once again in the fourth with two more runs.
Ally Distler started the rally with a single before scoring two plays later on a
Ava Fugate triple. Fugate then scored one play later when the 'Jackets' shortstop Fallyn Marshall dropped a pop up in left field, scored as a RBI sacrifice fly for
Nicole Christensen.
Adair then retired five more in the fifth and sixth before her Yellow Jacket counterpart Crystal Amaral hit a laser to center field to break up what would have been Adair's third straight shutout.
Adair then retired four more 'Jackets, three on strikes to complete the win, her tenth of the season. With the victory, Adair also moved into a fifth place tie in CMU history for career wins with 36 matching Cassie Phillips' total.
Amaral was solid for BHSU and fanned six Mavericks but surrendered eight hits and the five runs to fall to 5-10.
Iliana Mendoza had two of those hits to lead the Mavericks offensively. CMU had five extra-base hits as a team, including three doubles.
Game 2
The Mavericks wasted no time in taking the lead as they scored six runs in the bottom of the first after a 1-2-3 Mauser top half.
Bradford hit the first pitch of the bottom half of the inning over the right field fence before
Brandi Haller and Christensen both hit 2-run homers later in the inning. Distler also had an RBI double in the frame.
After going down in order in the second, the Mavericks then put up four more runs in the third, all with two outs, as Bradford hit her second home run of the game to give CMU a 10-0 lead. Earlier in the third, Mendoza drove in Christensen with an RBI single before moving to third on a Yellow Jacket error.
Pinch-hitter
Rylee Crouch had also recorded an RBI single up the middle.
CMU used seven different pinch hitters in the third and fourth innings of the blow out. That group also contributed significantly in the fourth as
Aislyn Sharp became the 13
th different Maverick to hit a home runs this season with a pinch-hit 3-run homer to left center to complete the scoring.
Meanwhile, Mauser (9-2) needed just 64 pitches to record the shutout as she took a no-hitter into the fourth, which was broken up by a single off a diving Christensen's glove. However, the Maverick defense then turned in a double play to get out of that inning.
BHSU then added two more hits in the fifth.
Mauser finished the game with four strikeouts.
The Mavericks have now won 23 straight games over BHSU since 2013 and have been beaten at home just once in 16 contests this season.
The two teams will battle in another doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
