Distler hits three homers as Mavs make quick work of BHSU

CMU hits six more bombs in Sunday doubleheader sweep

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Ally Distler hit three of Colorado Mesa University's six home runs while pitchers Ellie Smith and Paige Adair allowed just five total hits for the Mavericks, who made quick work of visiting Black Hills State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday here at the CMU Softball Stadium.

The Mavericks posted 9-1 and 8-0 victories during the day needing just five innings to win each game while completing a 4-game weekend sweep of the Yellow Jackets (10-20, 8-20 RMAC), who scored just two total runs throughout the weekend.

CMU scored 38 and won three of the four contests via the mercy rule in five innings.

Sunday's games were wrapped up in a combined two hours and eight minutes of play, with the second going for just 1:01.

In the process, the Mavericks won for the 31st and 32nd times in their last 33 games to improve to 33-5 overall and to 25-1 in RMAC play keeping pace with Colorado Christian University (37-5), which also swept a Sunday afternoon doubleheader against the Colorado School of Mines in Lakewood to join the Mavs at 25-1 in the RMAC standings.  The Cougars have now won 23 consecutive games.

The Mavs and Cougars will go head-to-head for what is looking more and more likely to be the RMAC title deciding series on Apr. 23 and 24 in Lakewood.  Before that, CMU plays at UCCS while CCU will go to Adams State next weekend.

Game 1

As they did in Saturday's second game, the Mavericks scored six runs in the bottom of the first to put the game away early.  Distler and Nicole Christensen hit home runs in the inning as the Mavericks sent all nine starters to the plate.

Ava Fugate then hit a solo homer with one out in the third to extend the Mavs' lead to 7-0 before Lauren Wedman, Ashley Bradford and Myah Arrieta all hit consecutive doubles in the bottom of the fourth to give the Mavs a 9-1 lead.

Meanwhile, Smith was dominant in the circle retiring the first seven Yellow Jackets she faced before hitting Hailey Franklin with one out in the third.  The Mavs then turned a double play to get out of that inning.

The Yellow Jackets would score their only run in the fourth when Lizzy Johnson drew a 4-pitch walk to begin the inning before pitcher Crystal Amaral drove her home after two ground outs.

Smith allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out five 'Jackets in the win, improving to 13-2.  She needed just 66 pitches to do so.

Amaral (5-11) suffered the lost after giving up ten hits and eight earned runs to the Mavericks, who registered six extra-base hits.

Arrieta went 3-for-3 while Fugate was 2-for-2.  Both had two RBIs, while Christensen hit her 3-run home run.  Ashley Bradford also went 2-for-3 in the lead-off spot.

Game 2

Distler hit two home runs in the game as she and Sarah Jorrisen hit back-to-back solo shots in the bottom of the fifth to record the walk-off, mercy-rule win.

Bradford and Wedman also doubled for the Mavs, who registered nine hits while scoring in all five innings of what was CMU's ninth shutout in the last 16 games.

The Mavs scored twice in the first inning thanks to a Yellow Jacket error.

The Mavs then doubled the lead to 4-0 in the second on a RBI double by Wedman followed by another error which allowed the all-American right field to score two plays later.

Distler then hit her second home run of the day and her first of the game to lead off the third before a RBI double by Bradford extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth.

Adair then retired the Yellow Jacket side in order in the top of the fifth setting the stage for Distler and Jorrisen to seal the game with their back-to-back shots.

Adair struck out five and allowed just two hits and one walk facing just three batters over the minimum.  Needing just 72 pitches, Adair improved to 11-1 with her fourth individual shutout of the campaign.

Braford, Distler and Jorissen all had two hits in the game for the Mavs.
