COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University redshirt junior outfielder
Brandi Haller hit four of the Mavs' seven home runs, swatting two out of Mountain Lion Field in each game of a Friday afternoon Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep against UCCS.
Nicole Christensen also hit two home runs while
Myah Arrieta hit another in the first game, which the Mavericks won 10-4. The Mavs got out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning in that game and then jumped out another 3-0 lead in their first at-bat of the second game, going on to win it 9-1 in five innings.
Haller finished the day with an incredible 11 RBIs as she went 4-for-5 with five runs scored and two walks throughout the day. She hit a home run against all four of the Mountain Lion pitchers who worked during the twin-bill and now has 12 home runs and 20 extra-base hits this season.
With the victories, the Mavericks improved to 35-5 overall and to 27-1 in RMAC play with their tenth and 11
th consecutive wins, maintaining a share of the conference lead with Colorado Christian, which also swept a doubleheader over Adams State in Alamosa. The Cougars (39-5) have won 25 straight games and are on a joint collision course with the Mavs, who will travel to Lakewood for a likely RMAC-title deciding series next Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 23-24).
Game 1
The Mavericks hit three home runs in the first half-inning as Arrieta hit a 1-out solo shot before Haller hit a 3-run shot to plate
Ellie Smith, who reached on an error,
Ally Distler, who had singled, and herself. Christensen then added a back-to-back shot to give the Mavs a 5-0 lead.
Morgan Hernandez-Belew would pull one run back four UCCS with a homer of her own to begin the bottom of the first.
The score remained 5-1 until the sixth when Haller drew a lead-off walk before Christensen hit her second home run of the game and eighth of the season to put the Mavs up 7-1.
The Mavs then turned a double play in the bottom of the sixth before Smith and Distler were both hit by pitches from separate Mountain Lion pitchers set up Haller for another 3-run shot just two plays later.
UCCS would go on to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh and scored one run on a walk before a 2-run throwing error completed the scoring.
CMU pitcher
Paige Adair picked up the win to improve to 12-1 after giving up just two hits and a run while striking out three in four innings. Smith then picked up a rule-book save after giving up just one earned run in three innings of relief.
Haller had six RBIs on her two 3-run homers while Christensen was 2-for-2 with two RBIs while stealing a base.
Both teams finished with seven hits as Braelyne Crenshaw (6-10) took the loss for UCCS after giving up six hits and eight runs, four of which were earned, while walking four and hitting two Mavericks.
Game 2
Haller went on to hit her third 3-run home run of the doubleheader in the first inning as the Mavs went up 3-0 before extending the lead to 4-0 in the second when Arrieta singled to plate
Iliana Mendoza with two outs.
The Mountain Lion's Paige White then hit a 1-out homer in the bottom of the second for their only run before a 2-run Haller homer in the third extended CMU's lead to 6-1. Two more Mountain Lion errors later in the inning led two more unearned runs as CMU led 8-1 after three frames.
The Mavs then completed the scoring in the fifth as
Ashley Bradford hit a 2-run double before a Distler single two plays later gave CMU a 9-1 lead and the eventual mercy-rule win as
Shea Mauser completed the victory from within the circle.
Mauser (10-2) allowed just three hits without a walk and struck out eight Mountain Lion hitters.
The Mavs finished with eight hits as a team as Lexi Rayburn (8-6) took the loss after giving up the first four runs in 1 1/3 innings.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.
