BOULDER, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University athletes took the top three places in the men's javelin throw as a group of Maverick throwers got the weekend underway in the opening events of the CU Invitational on Friday afternoon here at Potts Field.
Two Mavericks also set two personal-bests in the hammer throw.
CMU football student-athlete Creighton Sanders, who was competing unattached, won the javelin throw with a mark of 59.63 meters (195 feet, 8 inches) while indoor heptathlon all-American
Dawson Heide finished second at 54.11 meters (177-6) in his first outdoor meet in nearly three years.
Maverick redshirt freshman
Dallas Davis III completed the 1-2-3 sweep at 53.56 meters (175-9), a 7-foot, 9-inch improvement over his effort from last week in his first collegiate meet. Another CMU football player in
Cameron Kalaf also finished ninth at 47.77 (156-9) in his collegiate track & field debut.
Heide's mark was nearly 54 feet further than he had thrown as a freshman in 2019 and moved him all the way to third in program history while putting him fourth on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference performance list for the season.
Davis ranks sixth in program history and fifth in the RMAC with his throw.
In the men's hammer throw, redshirt freshman
Jameson Moore moved up four spots to sixth in CMU history with his throw of 49.63 meters (162-10), which was the best in his flight and good for ninth place in a field of 21 overall throwers.
Hayden Riley finished 15
th at 43.24 meters (141-10).
Sophomore
Meleeah Holmes-McKown also set a personal-best of 45.37 meters (148-10), a 15-inch improvement on her PR from a week ago. In the process, she moved up a spot to fourth in CMU history. Freshman
Heather Yackey also competed, finishing 23
rd with a third-round throw of 35.61 meters (116-10) after fouling on her first two attempts.
