PUEBLO, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Mica Jenrette won her fourth consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference multi-event title as she led a strong 23-team point haul in the heptathlon to lead the Maverick women into second place in the team standings after two of three days at the RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which continued Saturday here at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.
Jenrette was also one of three Mavericks to qualify for Saturday's finals in the sprints and hurdles as she and
Averie Griffith advanced in the 100-meter hurdles while
Sierra Arceneaux did the same in the 200-meter dash.
The Mavericks went 1-3-4-7 in the heptathlon as Jenrette defended her title with 4,769 points, 210 more than UCCS sophomore Maggie Remsberg, the runner-up. Jenrette has also won the past two indoor pentathlon titles and now has a school-record five conference titles to her credit.
Meanwhile, CMU's
Sophie Lindauer took third with 4,272 points over the seven disciplines in what was just her second career heptathlon, moving up to fifth on the Mavericks' all-time performers list.
Jordan Brockman finished fourth with 4,081 points, just one off her personal record, while freshman
Hope Matteson finished seventh with 3,581 despite fouling on all three of her javelin throw attempts.
Meanwhile, Arceneaux won her preliminary 200-meter heat in 24.07 seconds to qualify second for Sunday's final. Teammates
Serenity Burnett-Perry (25.24) and
Victoria Eversley (26.10) finished 11
th and 16
th, respectively.
In the hurdles, Griffith ran a career-best time of 14.82 to qualify fifth for Sunday's final. Jenrette also had a personal-best of 14.87 to qualify seventh, surging to sixth on the Mavs' all-time performers list in the process, one spot behind Griffith.
Two other event finals were contested on Saturday.
Maverick freshman
Rachel Meeks finished seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase which completed the women's competition for the day in a time of 11:52.69.
In the discus throw, freshman
Heather Yackey placed 11
th with a throw of 38.35 meters (125-10). Sophomore teammate
Meleeah Holmes-McKown finished 16
th with a throw of 36.66 meters (120-3).
UCCS leads the team standings through six completed events with 50 points. The Mavericks have 34 while Black Hills State has 33.
