COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University redshirt sophomore
Mica Jenrette was named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Women's Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by conference officials on Wednesday afternoon.
The Los Lunas, New Mexico native broke her own school-record by scoring a RMAC-leading and NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying mark of 4,982 points in the heptathlon at last week's Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California.
The score puts the defending RMAC heptathlon champion and 2-time reigning RMAC pentathlon champion in front of the rest of the conference by 452 points. She also ranks seventh nationally and is in good position to qualify for next week's NCAA Division II National Championships.
Jenrette was the highest Division II finisher in her section of last week's meet and finished better than 11 Division I athletes in the competition last Wednesday and Thursday (Apr. 13-14).
This athlete of the week honor is the first of Jenrette's career but is far from the first honor she has received as one of the most decorated Maverick track & field athletes in program history.
Jenrette has won four RMAC titles, including each of the last three multi-event crowns, and has earned three U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association First Team All-America plaudits. She also holds the CMU record in five events and has earned six All-RMAC and five USTFCCCA All-Region certificates in a Maverick uniform.
The Maverick women have received the RMAC Field Athlete of the Week honor after each of their first three weeks of the outdoor season. High jumper
Josie Coffey had claimed it in both of the previous two weeks.
The Mavericks are off this week and will then head to Spearfish, South Dakota to compete in the RMAC Championships next Friday-Sunday (Apr. 29-May 1).
