AZUSA, Calif.— Three-time Colorado Mesa University all-American
Mica Jenrette broke her own school record in the heptathlon and likely booked a trip to the this year's NCAA Division II National Championships in the event as she scored 4,982 points over seven disciplines at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday here at Azusa Pacific University's Cougar Stadium.
Her mark easily surpassed the national meet provisional qualifying standard of 4,516 points and was an 81-point improvement over her former Maverick standard of 4,901 points, set at the 201 Mines Last Chance Meet. Jenrette, who narrowly missed out on qualification for the 2021 national championships will rank as high as third on this year's national performance lists pending other weekend meets from around the country.
Jenrette, who has finished sixth in the indoor pentathlon at each of the last two NCAA Division II Championships was competing in Section B and took 11
th place overall out of 26 starters. She was the top NCAA Division II athlete in the section and finished higher than ten Division I athletes.
CMU also had three other heptathletes in Section C.
Jordan Brockman finished 11
th in that group with a personal-best score of 4,082 points to move up a spot to sixth in CMU history.
Sophie Lindauer finished 14
th with 4,013 points while
Hope Matteson placed 18
th with 3,500. Lindauer and Matteson were contesting the heptathlon for the first time in their respective careers.
Lindauer is now ranked seventh in program history while Matteson is now 11th on the Mavs' all-time performers list with her total score.
Jenrette, who won the 2021 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference heptathlon title, now leads the RMAC performance list by 452 points. The other Mavericks all look safely qualified for the RMAC Championships and rank third, fourth and fifth in the conference, pending any other meet results not yet reported to the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS).
Jenrette set a personal-best time of 25.62 in the 200 meters, the last of four events contested on Wednesday. She also closed Thursday on a high note, posting an outdoor career-best time of 2:18.30 in the 800 meters to finish third in the section. That time moves Jenrette up two spots to fifth in CMU outdoor history. The Los Lunas, New Mexico native also holds the Mavs' indoor 800 record at 2:16.59.
She also turned in strong efforts of 15.23 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, 1.61 meters (5 feet, 3 ¼ inches) in the high jump and 10.70 meters (35-1.25) in the shot put on Wednesday. She began Thursday by leaping 5.42 meters (17-9.25) in the long jump and by throwing the javelin 30.91 meters (101-5).
Brockman, a redshirt sophomore from Flagstaff, Arizona, scored more than 700 points in each of the three running disciplines. She also set new career-bests in three of the seven total events, posting a time of 26.75 seconds in the 200, a throw of 21.40 meters (70-2) in the javelin throw and a time of 2:27.25 in the 800.
Lindauer also set or established four new PR's while matching another. The Longmont, Colorado native was amongst the top 10 finishers in Section C in three events, finishing second in the 200 meters at 25.62, third in the 800 at 2:24.57 and tied for sixth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters (5-1).
Matteson, a freshman from Reno, Nevada, set new PRs in both throwing events as well as in the 800 meters and was contesting the 100-meter hurdles and 200 meters for the first time in her collegiate career. Her best point-scoring event was the high jump as she cleared 1.52 meters (4-11.75) to score 644 points.
