GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Trent Pernell matched a career-high with four goals and assisted on the game-winner as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks rallied to score the final four markers in a 15-12 win over visiting Colorado College on Saturday afternoon men's lacrosse action at Community Hospital Unity Field.
The Mavericks trailed 12-11 in a back-and-forth game with 12:27 left before
Duncan Cross leveled the score with 9:43 to go.
AJ Switzer then scored his team-leading 22
nd goal of the season on a feed from Pernell as the Mavericks went ahead for good, 13-12 with 6:21 left.
James Steinke and
Levi McCoy then scored late goals to help the Mavericks salt the win over the Tigers.
CMU improved to 7-3 with the win while the Tigers slipped to 2-7.
Pernell, who had five points, was one of ten different Mavericks who scored. Steinke and
Alex Blatt both had two goal games while
Carson Schwark,
Hunter Holcomb,
Drew Eickelman, Cross, Switzer,
Jed Brummett and McCoy all scored one.
Holcomb also had two assists and finished the game with three points.
Dylan Checketts went 10-for-16 at the face-off spot while Holcomb added four ground balls to lead the Mavs to a 27-22 edge in that statistical category.

Reece Sullivan just before the mid-way point of the third quarter.
Declan Maguire scored three goals to lead the Tigers.
He had given CC their first lead with a man-up goal with 12:11 left in the second quarter before the Mavericks went on a 5-0 run with four goals coming in a stretch of just 3:34 to build a 8-4 lead.
However, the Tigers scored three times late in the second quarter to close within 8-7 at the half.
They then went on another 3-0 run early in the third to take a 10-9 lead after three quarters.
Pernell then tied the contest with 13:30 to go before Dylan Brown put the Tigers ahead 12-11.
However, the Mavericks clamped down defensively down the stretch as they allowed just three fourth-quarter shots while forcing seven turnovers en-route to the late rally, which proved to be the difference.
The Mavericks will remain at home for their next game as they resume Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a Sunday, Apr. 10 contest against CSU Pueblo.
