ADRIAN, Mich. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team wrapped up the collegiate season on Saturday at the Merrilat Center as the placement matches took place at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship hosted by Adrian College.
Redshirt sophomore
Marissa Gallegos won her two matches on the day to finish in third place at 123 pounds just one spot lower then where she was seeded. The Denver native earned her first win of the day by technical fall 12-1 over North Central's Amani Jones at 4:19 of the bout.
In the third-place match, she pinned fellow Denver native Cayden Condit of Lindenwood just 1:25 into the bout.
Quite possibly one of the biggest surprises of the tournament was true freshman, 191-pounder
Jayleen Sekona who placed third after coming into the tournament unseeded. Sekona defeated Simon Fraser's Katja Osteen 9-6 in the consolation semifinals. She then beat Nia Croasdale of King 4-1 to place third at the weight.
In the tournament, Sekona managed to defeat the No. 3 seed twice, the No. 6 seed, and the No. 5 seed.
Grand Junction product Kaylee Haynes wound up fourth at 143 pounds. Haynes won her first match over Riley Arnold of North Central by way of pin before falling to Sacred Heart's Madison Sandquist in the third-place bout.
The Washington duo of
Claire DiCugno and
Holly Beaudoin each placed sixth in back-to-back weights of 130 and 136 pounds. Each faced a previously upset wrestler from the front side of the bracket that ended up taking third.
Fellow true freshman
Tatum Heikkila placed seventh after winning her lone match of the day. Heikkila defeated Sacred Heart's Jacklyn Smith 9-3 in the bout placing one spot higher then she was seeded.
Colorado Mesa ended up fifth in the team standings with 89 points.
