COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference released their first Wrestler of the Week award of the season on Tuesday (Nov. 4) morning. Colorado Mesa's
Jayleen Sekona was named the RMAC Women's Wrestler of the Week following her dominant performance in the Maverick Tri-Dual and the Maverick Open last weekend.
The Anchorage, Alaska native opened the weekend with a pair of 10-0 technical fall wins over her opponents from Snow College and Texas Woman's in the Maverick Tri-Dual on Saturday. The two wins helped cap a strong performance by the Mavericks as they only lost two total matches on the day.
The senior continued her onslaught of her opponents in Sunday's Maverick Open. Sekona claimed the 207-pound championship with a pair of pins and her third 10-0 technical fall of the weekend. She defeated Fort Hays State's Hailey Conley in the championship by pin at the 1:22 mark of the first period. That capped a weekend where none of her matches made it to the second period.
The three-time All-American now has 77 wins in her career and is in pursuit of becoming the first 100 match winner for the Mavericks.
Sekona and the Mavericks will be back on the mat on Saturday November 15 when they are set to take on new NCAA Division II member Vanguard from Southern California and NAIA perennial power Providence from Great Falls, Mont. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 5pm.
