GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team crowned four champions and had a total of 20 total wrestlers place in the top six at the Maverick Open on Sunday (Nov. 2) afternoon in Brownson Arena.
 
The Mavericks had at least one top six finisher at every weight including four at 117 pounds.
 
It was an all-Colorado Mesa final at 124 pounds with sophomore, returning All-American 
Lorianna Piestewa took on freshman 
Kylee Golz in the final. The veteran Piestewa came out on top 10-0 in a technical fall win to finish the weekend 5-0. The Gallup, N.M. native had two technical falls, a decision and her lone pin came in the semifinals against Texas Woman's Brooke Zejada which came at 4:18 of the bout.
 
Golz went 3-1 in the tournament with three straight technical fall wins including one over her teammate 
Brooke McCurley in the semifinals.
 
Senior 
Hania Halverson capped a solid opening weekend with a championship at 131 pounds after pinning Fort Hays State's Addison Broxterman at 55 seconds into the match. Halverson went 4-0 with two technical falls a decision victory, over her teammate 
Thalia Vogelsang in the semifinals, and a pin to go 5-0 on the weekend.
 
Gretchen Donally didn't surrender a point on the day to capture the title at 145 pounds. Donally tech' d her way through the bracket earning four consecutive 10-0 wins including the final against Mackenzie Blue of Texas Woman's. In the semis, the Ballantine, Mont. native earned a 10-0 technical fall win over Alexis Burton of Fort Hays State and would go on to finish the weekend with a perfect 6-0.
 
Redshirt senior 
Jayleen Sekona continued her dominance as she won the 207-pound weight class with a pin of Fort Hays State's Hailey Conley at 1:22 mark of the bout. The Anchorage, Alaska native had two pins and a technical fall on the day. She earned a pin of Fort Hays State's Grace Johns in the semifinals at 1:33 to cap the 5-0 weekend.
 
Fellow senior Kim Carlin had a strong day with a second-place finish at 180. The Loveland, Colo. native earned pins in her first three matches heading into the semifinals including a pin of Maeli Howard of Snow College in the semifinals at 4:38. She ran into a buzzsaw in Isabella Renfro of Fort Hays State in the final falling by pin.
 
At 125 pounds, 
Mia Zuniga finished in third-place after defeating Texas Woman's Alexa Rodriguez 6-4 and finished the day with three wins. Teammate 
Adriana Gomez finished third at 110 pounds after earning an injury default win over Abbey West of Utah Tech late in the first period.
 
Morgan Johnson defeated teammate 
Jojo McDaniel in the third-place match at 117 pounds to cap a quartet of Maverick placers at the weight. Johnson finished the day with four wins and her only loss coming in the semifinals.
 
Colorado Mesa had another all Maverick third-place match at 138 pounds with 
Keyla Ajoleza defeating 
Makenzie Krenz 4-3. Ajoleza finished the day with six wins and just one loss that came in the quarterfinals.
 
At 160 pounds, senior 
Celina Preston backed up her win over Poorna Babu of Texas Woman's from Saturday night with another in the third-place match with a 9-5 win. Preston finished the day 6-1 and is now 7-1 on the season.
 
Brooke McCurley (124), and 
Alyssa Jackson (131) both reached the third-place match before falling. McCurley fell to Fort Hays State's Morgan Maschmann and Jackson lost to Adams State's Mckenna Hendrickson.
 
Sophia Cornish (117) was the lone fifth-place finisher for Colorado Mesa.

Bella Morales (117), 
Thalia Vogelsang (131) and 
Noelle Buck (207) each finished in sixth-place for the Mavericks.
 
The Mavericks hosted 10 different teams and over 160 wrestlers competed in this year's event.
 
Colorado Mesa will be back on the mat on Saturday November 15 with another Tri-Dual. The Mavericks are scheduled to take on NCAA newcomer Vanguard and NAIA powerhouse Providence from Great Falls, Mont.
