GOLDEN, Colo.— Ashley Bradford hit a home run in each game as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks banged out 22 hits, including four which sailed over the Joe Coors Jr. Field fence in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball sweep over the Colorado School of Mines on Friday afternoon.
The Mavericks also received a 2-hit shutout from pitcher
Ellie Smith in the second game as they claimed 6-3 and 11-0 wins to run their winning streak to 11 games. The second game was ended via the mercy-rule in five innings as the Mavs picked up their first run-rule victory of the campaign while improving to 12-4 overall and to 6-0 in the RMAC.
Mines fell to 1-13 overall and to 1-5 in conference play.
Game 1
Bradford and
Brandi Haller provided the big blows as the Mavericks used a 5-run fourth-inning to open up a commanding lead en-route to the series-opening win.
Ally Distler started that inning with a single before
Myah Arrieta hit a RBI double moments later. Arrieta then scored on a
Sarah Jorissen sacrifice fly later in the inning before Haller hit a 3-run homer to center to give the Mavs a 5-0 lead.
They then extended the lead to 6-0 in the sixth on a Bradford lead-off shot to left center.
Meanwhile, Maverick starter
Shea Mauser retired 16 of the first 17 Orediggers she faced before finally giving up a run in the bottom of the sixth on a 2-out Lauren Decker single that plated Kailey Morales, who had drawn a 1-out walk before moving to second on a groundout.
The Orediggers then recorded four more hits and scored two runs on a Grace Gonzales single in the bottom of the seventh.
However, the rally was not nearly enough as Mauser earned her third straight win giving up just six hits and a walk while striking out four.
The Mavericks finished the game with ten hits against three Oredigger hurlers. Bradford, Distler, Arrieta and
Mallory Warner all went 2-for-4 while
Lauren Wedman drew three of the of the four walks handed out by the Mines pitchers.
Game 2
Bradford and
Ava Fugate both hit homers as Smith needed just 51 pitches to record the 5-inning, 2-hit shutout, her second consecutive shutout.
Fugate's homer, her first of the season and second of her career, came in the top of the first as she hit a shot down the right field line to score Wedman, who had drawn her fourth walk of the doubleheader with one out.
The Mavs then extended their 2-0 lead to 9-0 with a 7-run third-inning, their most prolific inning of the season to date. A 3-run Bradford homer punctuated the barrage after a 2-run Smith double and 2-run Haller single had done the earlier damage. Wedman and Fugate both reached safely twice in the inning.
The Mavs then added single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings to complete the scoring.
Meanwhile, Smith retired the first ten Orediggers she faced before giving up her only two hits in the bottom of the fourth before getting out of the mini-jam as the Mavs threw out Decker at the plate before a ground out ended the Orediggers' bid for a run.
Smith (5-2) then retired three straight after a Maverick error in the bottom of the fifth to complete the shutout. She faced just 17 batters throughout the game and struck out three.
The Mavericks finished the night-cap with 12 hits, including five for extra bases as Decker (1-4) gave up nine hits and the same number of runs in 2 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Ten different Mavs recorded hits as Fugate went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs while
Nicole Christensen went 2-for-3.
The teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m., weather permitting.
