Beach Volleyball Finishes Day 1 of CMU Tournament, 3-0.

Grand Junction, Colo. – In front of their home fans, the Colorado Mesa Beach Volleyball team added three wins to their season total, on day 1 of the CMU Tournament. The Mavericks downed all three of the visiting teams, to bring their record to 6-5.

The Mavs opened the two-day tournament against the Bruins of Salt Lake Community College, taking a 5-0 decision in dominant fashion. Without a pair at the fives flight, the Mavs collected an easy point in the dual. They made it a shutout with straight set sweeps at the remaining four flights. Five of the eight total sets the Mavs held the Bruins to single digits.

Up next were the Utes out of the University of Utah, a long-awaited rematch between the two teams from a season ago. Using a 4-1 win, the Mavs extended their win streak over the Utes to three.

Holly Schmidt and Macie Lachemann put CMU on the board first, taking the twos flight in two sets. Battling back in the second, Ara Norwood and Sierra Hunt took their No. 4 flight to give a 2-0 edge after the first two matchups.

Sabrina VanDeList and Tye Wedhorn clinched the dual at the No. 5 spot with identical 21-15 scores in two sets.

Closing out the remaining pairs, Jada Hall and Jessa Megenhardt rallied in the second set to take the threes 21-18, 21-19.

Utah's Grace Andrews and Bella Vezzani stole the sweep with a win in the top flight, over Hahni Johnson and Savannah Spitzer.

The Mavericks closed out the day against Trinidad State Junior College. Plagued by injury the Trojans sent just three pairs, giving the Mavericks a quick 2-0 lead in the closing dual.

Ashton Reese teamed up with Sydney Leffler for a straight set victory. Savannah Ott and Hailey Peters going 2-0 on the day together, and Izzy Burns and Taylor Schreff taking a quick two-set win in their Maverick home debuts.

Colorado Mesa will meet up with Trinidad State at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning, before capping off the weekend with another battle against the Utah Utes at 3 p.m.
