SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team began their trek through the spring season on Thursday (Mar. 10) afternoon as the played the opening round of the Biola Eagle Invitational at The Grand Golf Club. Eight teams are competing in the tournament with schools coming from the RMAC, CCAA and the PacWest.
The Mavericks are in fourth place as a team after the first round this afternoon, shooting a 28-over, 316. They are just three strokes behind third place Biola and nine strokes behind second place Point Loma.
Elly Walters led the team on the individual leaderboard after shooting a 2-over, 74 and is in the hunt for the medalist honor. She is in a tie for third and six strokes behind the leader. Walters carded four birdies against six bogeys in her round.
She opened her round on hole No. 1 and registered a birdie on the par-4, 324 yard hole. The Rifle, Colo. native finished her round with five straight pars.
Freshman
Cassidy Phelan finished with a 5-over, 77 in her opening round. She had five birdies in her round but had three doubles that cost her the three strokes to be tied with Walters. Phelan closed her round with three pars and a birdie.
Colorado Mesa will play their second and final round tomorrow beginning at 9am.
