DES MOINES, Iowa – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team had a banner day at the Grand View Open as they faced some of the top teams in the country at every level. The Mavericks finished with two champions and seven total placers in the field
The Mavericks were one of three teams that had more than one champion crowned during the event. They joined Texas Wesleyan and Augsburg as the three schools each had two champions.
Marissa Gallegos claimed the championship at 123 pounds after she defeated Alisha Howk 6-2. The Denver native finished the day 6-0 that included five wins by technical fall. In fact, all her matches leading up to the championship bout. She defeated nationally ranked Asia Nguyen-Smith of North Central in the semifinals 10-0.
Gallegos avenged her loss to Howk that she took at the United States Olympic Trials last summer.
Redshirt junior
Kaylee Lacy claimed her second open championship on Saturday as she defeated Madison Diaz from host Grand View by pin in the first period. The Grand Junction native went 5-0 that included three pins and two tech falls to claim her championship. In the semifinls, she pinned Kya Rybachek of North Central at 2:22 to reach the championship bout.
Lacy improves to 24-4 on the season and 64-35 in her career.
At 130 pounds,
Claire DiCugno finished as the runner-up s she fell to Texas Wesleyan's Lexi Basham 8-0 in the title bout. DiCugno navigated her way to the final with four tech falls and a 7-0 decision victory over Grand View's Andrea Schlabach in the semifinal. Her lone NCAA matchup came in her first bout of the day as she teched North Central's Flora Vizi 10-0.
Jayleen Sekona finished the day 4-1 to secure third-place at 191 pounds. Sekona defeated Iowa Wesleyan's America Lopez 2-0 in the third-place bout to finish out a solid day of wrestling. Sekona reached the semifinals before falling to Traeh Haynes of North Central to drop down into the consolation bracket.
Anja Tschohl reached the semifinals at 116 pounds before falling to Camille Fournier of Texas Wesleyan. Tschohl rebounded with a technical fall win over Grand View's Ashley Tobe 13-1 to reach the third-place bout. In her third-place match, she fell to Mateah Roehl of North Central by fall in a hotly contested bout.
Jolynn Harris and
Holly Beaudoin were set to square off in the fifth-place match at 136-pounds but the match limits didn't allow for the match to be contested. Harris wound up fifth and Beaudoin sixth-place. Harris finished the tournament with a 3-2 mark while Beaudoin went 5-1 with two no contests.
The Mavericks next competition will be the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship Southwest Regional at McKendree. The top five finishers at each weight will qualify for the National Championships at Adrian in March.
