Andrew Scoggin won the 100-yard backstroke event while teammate
Mahmoud Elgayar set two solid breaststroke times to lead a group of five Maverick swimmers in Saturday's portion of the Royal Open here at the Queens University of Charlotte's Levine Aquatic Center.
The meet was a final chance for the contingent of Mavericks to improve their chances of qualification for the NCAA Division II National Championships, which begin on Mar. 9 in nearby Greensboro. The official selections will be made on Wednesday.
None of the five Mavericks were able to improve upon their season-best times in action on Saturday.
Scoggin won his event in 49.22 seconds after qualifying first out of the morning preliminary session in 49.37. However, both times were off his season-best of 48.11 from last week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
Meanwhile,
Mahmoud Elgayar posted a NCAA "B" cut time of 54.85 seconds in a morning 100 breast stroke time trial before turning in another "B" cut time of 2:00.38 in a 200-yard time trial in the evening. However, he will have to hope this his season-best time of 54.23 or his 200 breast time of 2:00.05 will get him into the NCAA meet as an invited swimmer for the fourth straight year.
On the women's side,
Ellie Wilke turned in a time of 2:21.05 in the 200 breast finals to finish third before finishing a 100-yard time trial in 1:06.54.
Sarah Fillerup placed second in the 100 back finals at 57.45 seconds after turning in a preliminary session time of 57.23. She also had a 200-yard time trial clocking of 2:05.99.
Izzy Powers finished third in the 50 free, touching the wall in 24.10 seconds.
