CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Colorado Mesa University freshman swimmer
Ellie Wilke shaved nearly a second off her personal-best and moved up as many as seven spots on the NCAA Division II performers list in the 200-yard breaststroke as she posted a time of two minutes, 18.76 seconds in a time trail on Friday evening here at the Royal Open.
Wilke was one of five Mavericks in action during the day here at the Queens University of Charlotte's Levine Aquatic Center, which played host to the last chance meet designed to give swimmers one final opportunity to secure a spot in next month's NCAA Division II National Championships, which will be held in nearby Greensboro.
Wilkie came into the week ranked 33
rd in Division II and jumped up to as high as 26
th with her time, which was 0.93 seconds quicker than her runner-up time at last week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, which CMU hosted. Her time also allowed her to move up one spot to third in program history for the disciopline.
The Mahtomedi, Minnesota native was one of four Mavericks who surpassed the NCAA Division II "B" cut times in their respective events although the other three failed to improve upon their season-bests.
Mahmoud Elgayar finished second in the men's 100 breaststroke and posted a time of 54.87 in the morning preliminary session before turning in a time of 55.52 in the evening finals to place second.
Meanwhile, freshman
Andrew Scoggin posted a time of 48.67 seconds in a 100 back time trial.
Sarah Fillerup attempted the 200 back twice, finishing a preliminary heat in 2:02.19 before placing third in the finals with a mark of 2:02.62.
Izzy Powers turned in a time of 52.72 seconds in the women's 100 free final, finishing in sixth place.
The Maverick contingent will have one more day to qualify for nationals as the meet continues on Saturday.
