#10 Mavericks Manage Three Wins in 27-9 setback to #18 Mountaineers

GUNNISON, Colo. – The No. 10 Colorado Mesa wrestling team could manage only three wins in a 27-9 setback to the No. 18 Western Colorado Mountaineers on Thursday (Dec. 1) evening in Paul Wright Gym in a non-conference matchup between the two rivals.

The Mountaineers won the first four bouts of the evening including a major decision in a matchup of highly ranked wrestlers at 125 pounds. Mountaineer Patrick Allis, ranked No. 9 at 125 pounds, scored a 15-6 major decision victory over No. 3 Dawson Collins.

Western Colorado picked up an upset victory at 133 pounds as Alex Alvarez picked up a 4-2 decision victory over No. 5 ranked Collin Metzgar.

The Mavericks would have to wait until the 157-pound matchup before scoring their first win of the evening. Redshirt sophomore Daniel Magana earned a 3-2 win over Tannen Kennedy to cut the Mountaineer lead to 15-3. Magana scored a takedown early in the first period which was the difference in the bout.

Colorado Mesa got an upset victory of their own at 165 pounds as Gus Dalton scored a 15-13 win over No. 4 ranked Hunter Mullin of Western. Dalton, wrestling in his first match of the season, led 12-2 entering the third and final period. Mullin began the period with an escape and followed it up with a six-point move to cut Dalton's lead to 12-9 midway through the period. After a flurry of takedowns, the Emery, Utah native Dalton was able to hang on to secure the biggest win of his young career.

After a pair of Western Colorado wins at 174 and 184 pounds, Kash Anderson secured the Mavericks final win of the evening at 197 pounds as he earned a 9-3 win over Parker Gasser. The Boise, Idaho native led 2-0 after the first and built a large riding time advantage in the first and was able to build on that lead in the second and third periods.

The Mavericks will be off until the Midwest Classic which begins on December 17 in Indianapolis.
