Mavericks Hockey dropped two games this weekend to the University of New Mexico at home in front of large, boisterous crowds.
On Friday the Mavs opened the game with a solid 1
st Period with a score of 1-1. After some interesting penalties, the Mavs found themselves down 6-2 after the 2
nd period. The game finished 7-2 in favour of New Mexico. Freshman defenseman
Seth Kern, a stalwart for the Mavs on the blueline, scored his first collegiate goal.
Collin Fitzgerald notched the other tally.
The second game on Saturday started much like the first with the Mavs playing a strong game down 3-2 after 2 periods. In the 3
rd period the Mavericks put on a penalty killing clinic killing off 9-straight minutes of New Mexico powerplays. With little time left to even the score, the Mavs lost 4-2. Goalie
Jacob Babin was outstanding in net for the Mavericks turning aside 44 shots. The Mavs two goals were scored by Fitzgerald and
Colton Wurzer-Seepers.Â
The Mavs are back home next weekend against Northern Arizona. Saturday's game is the 6
th Annual Pink the Rink Cancer Charity Game. Puck drop is 7pm on Friday and 4:45pm on Saturday for the big charity game!
