GUNNISON, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University multi-event athletes
Mica Jenrette and
Dawson Heide combined to set four personal-bests as they led the Maverick indoor track & field teams during first day action here at the Mountaineer Open & Multi on Friday afternoon.
Jenrette set a new personal-best time of 9.16 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to win that event before taking three other sub-disciplines as she scored an improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying 3,511 points to win the women's pentathlon by a massive 575-point margin.
Meanwhile, Heide won two of the four men's heptathlon events contested on Friday while setting three new personal-best marks to open up a 29-point lead with an overall score of 2,925 points.
He was the only Maverick in the 7-man field and was competing for the first time in more than two years.
Heide, a redshirt junior out of Bayfield, Colorado won the 60-meter dash in 6.92 seconds to move into the No. 4 (tie) spot of program history for that discipline. He also recorded a winning and personal-best long jump mark of 6.74 meters (22 feet, 1 ½ inches) before finishing second in both the shot put and high jump with marks of 11.47 meters (37-7.75) and 1.87 meters (6-1.5). The shot put mark was a massive 1.13-meter (3-8.5) improvement over his former best.
Jenrette, the Maverick school-record holder, returning all-American and defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champion also fared best in the 5-women pentathlon field in the shot put, long jump and 800 meters after taking second in the high jump portion of the event. Her aforementioned hurdling time moved her into a tie for ninth in program history.
She recorded marks of 10.80 meters (35-5.25) in the shot put, 5.15 meters (16-10.75) in the long jump and a time of 2:27.31 in the 800 meters after taking second with a high jump clearance of 1.59 meters (5-2.5).
