GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team opened play in their second tournament of the fall on Monday (Sept. 27) afternoon at the RJGA Shootout at Estrella that is taking place at the Golf Club at Estrella.
The Mavericks are in 14
th place in the team race after a 34-over, 322 after the first round. They are the second highest RMAC team on the team leaderboard and are just six strokes behind the top ten. Cal State East Bay has the day one lead just one stroke ahead of Sonoma State.
Brandy McClain is currently leading the Mavericks after a 1-over, 73 in her first round. The score puts her in a tie for fourth for individual medalist honors, five strokes off the lead. McClain opened her round on No. 16 with a bogey but then played eight straight holes at even par before a birdie on No. 7 and a birdie on No. 9 put her at 1-under with six holes to play. A bogey on No. 10 and a double on No. 11 set her back but she rebounded with a birdie, on the par-3, No. 14.
Elly Walters shot a 9-over, 81 and was the Mavericks No. 2 golfer in the round. The Rifle native opened the day with a birdie but could never get in a rhythm after that.
Cal State East Bay's Drishti Karumbaya leads the tournament with a 4-under, 68.
The second and final round of the day will begin tomorrow morning.
