DENVER, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa women's golf team played an odd day one 36 holes in their season-opening event at the Swan Memorial at Todd Creek Golf Club and hosted by Colorado Christian on Monday (Sept. 13). The women typically play just 18 holes in their two rounds but will play a total of 54-holes in the event that features 19 schools from across the region.
The Mavericks had a little bit of a Jekyll and Hyde day shooting 329 in their first round then shaved 19 strokes off their score for a second round 310. The second round score was the fifth-best in the round and would have been the best score in round one. They are just five strokes off a top-five finish and 11 strokes behind fourth-place Colorado Christian. UCCS leads the tournament with a two-round total of 613, seven strokes better than second-place Midwestern State.
Elly Walters paced the Mavericks with a steady two rounds of golf, firing matching 76s and sits in fifth-place after her two rounds. Walters had three birdies in her two rounds and really just one big blemish, a double-bogey on the par-4, No. 10 in her second round. The Rifle native is just two strokes behind fourth-place Raelynn Hardgrave of UT Tyler and eight strokes behind the overall leader Juanita Gomez of Midwestern State.
Freshman
Cassidy Phelan had a tale of two rounds. She fired an 85 in her first round then rebounded with a 3-over, 75 in her second round. Phelan carded five birdies in the round including a run of four straight birdies from No. 7 to No. 10.
The third and final round is scheduled to begin at 7:30am.
